The saying goes, “There’s nothing like the genuine article.” Still, Sky Sports didn’t seem to take the adage to heart when Manchester United faced Crystal Palace.
Instead, the famous sports broadcasting channel enlisted an unconvincing body double for United’s new gargantuan signing, Wout Weghorst (via The Daily Mail).
As tradition dictates, Sky Sports displays each team’s starting XI on screen.
However, anyone who saw the Manchester United starting XI would have seen something was amiss regarding Weghorst, United’s latest signing.
The head belonged to the big forward, but the body was of a noticeably shorter player. Weghorst cuts an imposing figure, standing at 6ft 6in height.
The body double barely looked 6ft.
Weghorst also favours Adidas when it comes to his choice of boots. On the other hand, the body double was sporting a pair of Nikes.
The blunder left United officials bewildered as they had provided all the necessary assets for Sky in advance.
In response to the revelation, Sky says that the imagery needs to be captured by themselves. Evidently, time did not allow it.
Sky Sports refused to disclose whose body they used. Given the glaring height difference, some joked that it could have been Juan Mata.
The Weghorst-double returned before the Red Devils’ Arsenal defeat.
All eyes will be watching to see whether United can bounce back from their Gunners defeat when they face Nottingham in the Carabao Cup.
Many more will be waiting to see if the Weghorst impersonator makes another appearance.
United face Nottingham Forest at City Ground at 8pm GMT tonight.
