As reported by Sky Sports News, Liverpool are preparing a second approach for Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak, but a deal remains far from straightforward. With Newcastle unwilling to part ways with their marquee striker without securing a replacement, talks between the two clubs have not progressed beyond preliminary discussions.
Newcastle remain reluctant sellers and their stance is crystal clear. Any potential deal hinges entirely on their ability to bring in reinforcements, a task that has proven challenging so far this summer.
Newcastle’s struggles in the market are a significant roadblock. Sky Sports noted, “Newcastle are still looking for a signing to replace Callum Wilson, let alone Isak.” That statement alone underlines how thin their attacking options currently are. Wilson, who has battled injuries in recent seasons, can no longer be relied upon as a consistent presence, which makes the thought of losing Isak particularly problematic for Eddie Howe’s side.
There was optimism within Newcastle’s recruitment department earlier in the summer when they targeted RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, but the Slovenia international now appears to be Manchester United-bound. Sky Sports add, “They appear to have lost out to Manchester United in the race for Benjamin Sesko.” That development significantly complicates Liverpool’s hopes of landing their man.

Sources close to Liverpool have emphasised that the Reds are operating with patience and pragmatism in this window. Sky Sports report, “It is understood Liverpool will only pursue a target if they are viewed to be realistically attainable and available for what they deem to be a fair price.”
That approach aligns with Arne Slot’s transfer policy since arriving at Anfield. Fresh off a remarkable Premier League title win in his debut season, Slot has focused on continuity and clever integration of youth rather than star-chasing. That strategy seems to have taken shape in this window, as evidenced by the club’s intention to make room for academy star Rio Ngumoha.
The 16-year-old has impressed during pre-season and is being watched closely by the coaching staff. “The club are also keen to leave a pathway for 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha into the first-team squad,” Sky Sports confirm. That intent reinforces the idea that Liverpool’s current transfer model is long-term and development-focused, with big-money buys only considered when truly justifiable.
Alexander Isak would undoubtedly bring qualities suited to Slot’s high-tempo, attacking system. With his intelligent movement, clinical finishing and ability to link play, the Swedish international could become a central figure in Liverpool’s next phase. However, given Newcastle’s demands and the lack of alternative strikers on Tyneside, the path to Anfield is far from clear.
Negotiations may extend into the final stages of the window, and Liverpool are likely to remain disciplined rather than reactive. It would not be out of character for the club to walk away if Newcastle’s valuation becomes excessive or a deal appears logistically impossible.
There’s plenty of excitement and frustration bundled into this situation for Liverpool fans. Isak looks like a natural fit. He’s quick, sharp in front of goal, technically gifted and has the tactical flexibility to work across Slot’s fluid front line. If we could pair him with the likes of Salah, Gakpo and Diaz, that would give us one of the most unpredictable and lethal attacks in Europe.
But it’s also understandable that the club won’t be bullied into overpaying. Newcastle are digging their heels in and they have every right to, especially when they haven’t signed a replacement. Still, as a fan, you just want Liverpool to push this over the line somehow. Isak has the quality and age profile to be a mainstay in this side for the next five or six years.
It’s encouraging that the club are also thinking about the future with Ngumoha. If he really is the talent they say he is, then watching him develop under Slot will be a joy. Still, one or two proven attackers need to come in to replace the devastating loss of Diogo Jota. Isak might be that guy.
Let’s hope we’re not reading about another “almost signed” come deadline day.
