Sky Sports has now confirmed that Rangers Football Club have held talks with Steven Gerrard over a potential return to Ibrox as manager. The former Liverpool and England legend, who famously led Rangers to the 55th league title in 2021, is one of several names the club is actively considering for the vacant hotseat.
Gerrard left Ibrox nearly four years ago with his stock high, having ended Celtic’s long dominance and restoring pride in the blue half of Glasgow. However, stints at Aston Villa and more recently in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq didn’t go to plan, and the 43-year-old is currently out of work after parting ways with the Gulf club earlier this year.
According to the report, Gerrard is among a shortlist of candidates, with other names including Davide Ancelotti, Rob Edwards and Russell Martin. Rangers are believed to be finalising their selection in time for pre-season preparations in June, with Champions League qualifiers looming in July.
Gerrard’s return would undoubtedly split the fanbase. While some would welcome the nostalgia and proven success he brought to Ibrox, others may feel his departure to Villa in 2021 lacked loyalty, and his recent managerial record is patchy at best. Nevertheless, his knowledge of the club and Scottish football, along with his past achievements, could make him an appealing choice to steady the ship.
This news comes amid wider uncertainty at the club. With Barry Ferguson having completed his interim spell and major restructuring underway at board level, Rangers are under pressure to make a decisive, forward-thinking appointment. The failure to secure Will Still or Davide Ancelotti has heightened concern among fans, with some fearing the club is running out of options. A recent Ibrox Noise piece detailed these rejections and the growing unease over the board’s approach.
A Gerrard comeback, if it happens, would certainly dominate headlines and provide short-term excitement, but whether it represents a bold step forward or a nostalgic gamble remains to be seen. As we’ve previously explored, sentiment alone won’t fix the issues currently facing the club.
