So as we all now know, in a shock announcement from Rangers today, chairman John Bennett resigned his position and has stepped down from the club with immediate effect, citing health issues.

We 100% support him in his recovery and hope he is back to being fighting fit soon, whatever his next venture may be.

Most of us, sadly, are no strangers to ill health, Ibrox Noise can attest to this, and health comes first every time, so John has absolutely done the right thing for himself (and his family) and stepped down.

It is abundantly clear Rangers was too much for any one man to do alone, let alone Bennett, and the businessman was understandably out of his depth without a Sporting Director or CEO to help him.

He was effectively doing the jobs of three men and there’s only so much you can do before it gets to you.

We, as said, wish him the very best.

It does leave Rangers in one hell of a quandary though – Bennett was holding this ship together alone, without much help from anyone, and he’s been temporarily replaced by ‘Three Bears’ member John Gilligan who is now acting chairman.

Gilligan is an affable enough guy, a nice guy who absolutely has Rangers at heart and was part of the original 2015 ‘takeover’ alongside Paul Murray and Dave King.

He was the only one of those three Ibrox Noise really had time for, but we do wonder if he’s the right man to take the pressure of Rangers the way things are now.

That said, we give credit to him for stepping up to the plate in Rangers’ hour of need, because like Bennett, he will be pretty much on his own till the club at least appoints a CEO.

There are rumours Andrew McKinlay has come back into the reckoning and is due to be imminently announced, but we can’t verify that.

We do know that Rangers need an anchor and a rudder and if Gilligan and McKinlay can be that over the next week or so it will put Rangers in a much better position than we have been lately.

We really hope the boardroom can settle itself down soon.

And once more, we wish for John Bennett’s speedy recovery.
