Forward Callum Paterson could become the latest player to depart Sheffield Wednesday this summer amid interest from Oxford United and MK Dons.
Oxford United and MK Dons are pushing to sign ex-Sheffield Wednesday forward Callum Paterson.
Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri finally paid the wages of players and staff for May and June earlier this month, which lifted two of the club's three transfer embargoes, but the saga has had damaging consequences for the South Yorkshire outfit.
In a desperate attempt to raise funds, Chansiri sold Anthony Musaba to Samsunspor for £800,000 and fellow winger Djeidi Gassama to Rangers for £2.2 million, while forwards Josh Windass and Michael Smith had their contracts terminated by mutual consent after handing in their notices, with the pair joining Wrexham and Preston North End respectively.
Those departures have left the Owls with an incredibly thin squad ahead of the opening game of the season against Leicester City next Sunday, and as they are currently under a three-window ban on paying transfer fees, they can ill-afford any further departures.
However, according to The Star, Oxford United and MK Dons are plotting a move for Paterson, who became a free agent this summer following the expiration of his contract.
Therefore, as Wednesday's hopes of agreeing a new contract with the 30-year-old decrease, his five-year stay at Hillsborough could be set to come to an end.
It looked as though Paterson's days at Wednesday were numbered last summer amid claims that he would be allowed to leave if the club received a suitable offer, and he barely featured in the first half of last season.
However, Paterson forced his way back into manager Danny Rohl's plans following the turn of the year, and after ending the season with a respectable total of eight goals and two assists in 31 appearances, he was offered a new contract in May.
Paterson rejected the Owls' initial contract proposal, but it was revealed last week that the club were holding fresh talks with the forward over a potential new deal, and, in a further positive development, he returned to training with his former team-mates.
The Scot was expected to play a part in Wednesday's behind-closed-doors friendly against Mansfield Town on Saturday, but he did not make an appearance in the game, and The Star claim that it is now looking 'increasingly unlikely' that he will remain in S6 after Oxford and MK Dons made contact with the former Cardiff City man.
Oxford are preparing for another year in the Championship after securing survival under Gary Rowett last season, and they are no strangers to signing out-of-contract Owls stars, with Will Vaulks making the move from Hillsborough to the Kassam Stadium last summer.
MK Dons will be one of the promotion favourites in League Two next season after making a host of high-profile signings this summer, including Gethin Jones, Will Collar, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and Aaron Collins, and Paterson could be their next eye-catching arrival if manager Paul Warne can convince him to drop to the fourth tier.
Wednesday have already lost much of their attacking threat this summer after the departures of Musaba, Gassama, Windass and Smith, and Paterson's exit would be another devastating blow.
Paterson may split opinion among Owls supporters, but he has chipped in with some important goals for the club over the years, and ahead of what looks certain to be a challenging season, a player of his experience and character would have been a huge asset for Rohl's side.
However, with Wednesday currently unable to offer proper contract terms to Paterson due to their transfer embargo and wage cap, it was always going to be tough for them to convince him to extend his stay at the club.
