Sheffield Wednesday have been dealt another piece of harrowing news
Sheffield Wednesday have been hit with a prohibition notice over Hillsborough’s North Stand.
Times are never dull on the blue and white half of the Steel City, with Danny Rohl’s exit officially announced earlier today.
Now, there have been further developments to their ongoing North Stand situation, and it’s not good news.
It was recently reported that Hillsborough’s North Stand may not be open in time for the new season because "extensive corrosion" had been found in its roof.
Sheffield City Council's safety advisory group advised that until remedial work had been carried out, the authority would not be "in a position to approve the continuance of the existing general safety certificate".
This hasn’t happened and according to the Star, the Owls have now been handed a prohibition notice over its North Stand due to safety concerns.
Put simply, this means that as things stand, fans will not be granted access to that area of the ground less than three weeks out from the Championship’s start.
It’s understood that conversations have been ongoing between the club and Sheffield Council’s Safety Advisory Group since 2021, with second opinions brought in from a firm in Bangkok earlier this year with further inspections taking place since.
Wednesday were instructed to start addressing several issues with the stand before the close of 2024, but by the start of this summer hadn’t begun to start work on solving a range of problems.
This is believed to have included the re-enhancement and strengthening of six of the stand’s 18 steel trusses on its roof.
The North Stand has a capacity of 9,255 and closing it will reduce the capacity to just over 30,000.
Furthermore, it will also force Wednesday to relocate those who have bought season tickets in that area to another point in the ground, which is a headache they don’t need.
The Owls’ current state is somewhat embodied by the crumbling nature of Hillsborough’s North Stand, and it isn’t what anyone involved with the club needed ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
As fans enter the ground, they will be forced to gaze upon a once-celebrated piece of architecture, reduced to its currently unsafe reality.
Supporters will have grown sentimental to that area of the ground after sitting there for years and will feel hard-pressed over relocating next term.
Therefore, Wednesday must address this situation until it turns into yet another nightmare that has spiralled out of control.
