Some Sheffield Wednesday players are reportedly unhappy about the imminent return of manager Danny Rohl.

It has been a nightmare summer so far for Sheffield Wednesday, and with less than a month to go until the start of the new season, there are still plenty of issues for the troubled club to resolve.

Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship last season, but far from putting plans in place to build on their strong campaign, it has been a summer of off-field chaos at Hillsborough.

After failing to pay the wages of players and staff on time in May and June, the Owls have been hit with a three-window ban on paying transfer fees, while they are currently under three separate transfer embargoes.

In addition, at least seven Wednesday players are believed to have given notice of their intent to terminate their contracts, with more currently believed to be taking advice on whether to follow suit, and two of the club's stars, Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba, are set to be sold to Rangers and Samsunspor respectively as owner Dejphon Chansiri desperately attempts to raise funds.

If that was not enough drama for the Owls, there has been ongoing uncertainty over the future of manager Danny Rohl throughout the summer, and the bizarre saga involving the German has taken a fresh twist.

Having informed Wednesday of his desire to leave the club back in April, Rohl has been linked with a host of jobs this summer, including Southampton, Middlesbrough, Leicester City, RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen, but his high release clause seems to have been a problem for many of his suitors.

With his potential Hillsborough escape routes disappearing as more vacancies become filled, it was claimed that Rohl was in negotiations with the Owls over a severance package that would see his tenure at the club come to an end, and he did not report back for the start of pre-season training last month.

However, in an unexpected development, BBC Radio Sheffield journalist Rob Staton revealed on Wednesday afternoon that Rohl was planning to return to the club amid increasing hope that a takeover could be completed in the near future.

However, Rohl's plan to resume his role does not appear to have gone down well with the Owls squad, with The Star reporting that the "general consensus" among players and staff is that they are not keen for the 36-year-old to return as they feel that "too much has happened since the end of the season", and that has thrown the club's managerial situation back up into the air.

On the one hand, it is easy to see why Wednesday players are reluctant to welcome Rohl back to the club with open arms.

Rohl has spent the entire summer attempting to secure a new club, and he has made no secret of his desire to depart Hillsborough, even telling the German press in June that he is keen to manage in the Bundesliga "as soon as possible".

Such comments do not exactly paint a picture of a manager who is committed to the cause, and with many players deciding to return for the start of pre-season training despite not being paid, they may understandably feel betrayed that Rohl elected to stay away.

There are also question marks over why Rohl has had such a sudden change of heart, and it is possible that his failure to land the Leicester City job, which is set to go to former QPR head coach Marti Cifuentes, is behind his desire to return to work with the Owls, rather than because of the fact a takeover could be on the horizon.

However, on the other hand, it could be argued that players should not be able to dictate who manages them, and with at least seven of the Owls squad believed to have handed in their notices, some will question whether they are in a position to criticise Rohl for seeing an exit when they are essentially doing the same thing.

The divide among the squad about Rohl's potential return is also reflected in the fan base, with some feeling that he has burned his bridges through his actions over the summer and others believing that, under new ownership, there could be no better person to take Wednesday forward than the ex-Bayern Munich coach, who has undoubtedly proven his managerial credentials at Championship level.

The latest developments leave the Owls with a big decision to make over Rohl, but with a lack of leadership coming from board level as Chansiri moves closer to selling, the club's dramatic summer could be set to take another turn for the worse.
