Sheffield United are reportedly closing in on two unexpected late arrivals
Sheffield United are edging closer to an unprecedented double transfer swoop on deadline day, with medicals pencilled in for two unnamed forwards.
That's according to a recent report published by The Star, which has revealed two impending arrivals at Bramall Lane today in what has already been a busy window for Chris Wilder's side.
The Blades have made four additions throughout the mid-season window, with attacking duo Tom Cannon and Ben Brereton Diaz both arriving from Leicester City and Southampton respectively.
Brereton Diaz, of course, flourished on loan with the Blades during the second-half of the previous campaign and got off the mark this time out with the only goal in United's slender victory at Derby County on Saturday afternoon.
Cannon and Brereton Diaz have been joined by two further players arriving on loan from the Premier League in Hamza Choudhury and Ipswich Town defender Harry Clarke, both of whom will surely offer an additional boost to United's automatic promotion hopes. The Blades are currently in second place and find themselves two points behind league leaders Leeds United, but with a three-point gap over Burnley in third.
Now, though, the Blades look set to make their fifth and sixth signings of the window as they edge closer to an unprecedented double-swoop. What is most surprising, however, is that the unnamed pair are both said to be wingers, an area where Wilder has strengthened, having been identified by the club's fresh ownership group using an AI model.
Medicals have reportedly been arranged for the two signings, who are flying in from overseas ahead of tonight's deadline.
They may not be the only signings United make today, either, with the promotion hopefuls also interested in both Jimmy Dunne and Japhet Tanganga after losing Leicester City loanee Harry Souttar through a season-ending Achilles injury back in December. It's going to be a busy old day for the Blades, that much feels certain.
Following the loan return of Brereton Diaz, United's winger options are considerably stronger and the Chilean may now allow Gus Hamer to go back into his natural central midfield position, having filled in wide-left for much of the campaign. He's still an option there, though, and has performed admirably despite playing out of position.
That means United will soon have no shortage of wide options, with Jesurun Rak-Sayi also enjoying a strong campaign on the right-hand side. But his injury has meant Rhian Brewster has filled in there as of late, which shows how United do need additional wingers in through the door.
