Could the Championship Player of the Year for 2024-25 be on the move this summer?
Sheffield United star Gus Hamer could be exiting Bramall Lane this summer, with Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven reportedly interested in securing his services.
The midfielder was pivotal to the Blades' push for an immediate return back to the Premier League, and although they fell short of that, which ended up costing Chris Wilder his job as manager, it was a successful personal campaign for Hamer.
A recipient of the Championship Player of the Year award, after scoring 10 times and notching eight assists, Hamer was bound to be of interest to many this summer, and interest has now come from the 28-year-old's home country.
According to Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagsblad, Dutch champions PSV are keen on striking a deal for Hamer following his two years in the red and white of Sheffield United.
Elfrink claims that Hamer is among multiple options that Peter Bosz's side are considering in a bid to strengthen their midfield department, and that he "should" cost a transfer fee in the region of €8 million-€12 million (£6.8 million-£10.2 million) - that is despite United turning down a £13 million bid last summer from then-Championship rivals Leeds for his services.
Hamer had scored four times and added six assists on top of that in Sheffield United's brief Premier League excursion in 2023-24, but he was a star in the Championship from an unfamiliar role of left-wing under Chris Wilder last season - even if it didn't result in promotion by the end of it.
Hamer might be keen to move to a top flight club this summer - especially one that is guaranteed to be competing in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League, but there are reasons as to why PSV may not be his favoured destination.
The midfielder, who was born in Brazil but represented the Netherlands at youth level, came through the Feyenoord academy system and played twice for their first team before moving on to PEC Zwolle in 2018 - Hamer has made no secret in recent times of his desire to one day return to the Rotterdam-based outfit as a player.
And given he's a fan of the club from De Kuip, PSV being a big domestic rival of Feyenoord's could mean that Hamer will snub them if they come calling this summer, and given he's already on their list of transfer targets, a bid would appear to be likely at some point.
Sheffield United meanwhile will obviously be reluctant to sell one of their most prized assets and one of the Championship's best players, but it'll be difficult to stand in the way of Hamer if he has ambitions of playing at the very top level.
