Sheffield United could be set for a significant cash boost this summer if Everton sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle United. A product of the Blades academy, Calvert-Lewin was sold to the Toffees in August 2016 for approximately £1.5 million after making a dozen appearances for United’s first team.

It is thought that Sheffield United will be entitled to 20% of any future sale, and a departure from Goodison Park this window is looking extremely likely. The 27-year-old has 12 months left on his current Everton deal and he has not yet expressed interest over extending it.

As per The Telegraph, Newcastle United’s talks with Everton have intensified as they view the former England international as a replacement for back-up striker Callum Wilson, who is also likely to depart Tyneside over the next few weeks.

Calvert-Lewin was described as a “complete” striker by Carlo Ancelotti in 2020, via a report from Sky Sports, and it was under the Italian icon where the Sheffield-born striker would serve up the best form of his career. Across 60 appearances in all competitions Calvert-Lewin would bag 29 goals under Ancelotti’s tutelage. Since then he has only scored a total of 15 goals in all competitions across three campaigns.

The Magpies are not alone in their pursuit; they face competition from Premier League clubs West Ham and Brentford, all vying for the Everton striker’s signature. Italian giants AC Milan have joined the fray as well. This comes as Milan seek a replacement for Olivier Giroud, who has since departed for Los Angeles Football Club in the MLS.

Everton, meanwhile, are under significant financial pressure to finalise sales before the June 30 PSR health check deadline. As a result, they have set a substantial £37 million price tag on Calvert-Lewin, per the Chronicle Live. The club’s need to balance their books adds urgency to the negotiations, potentially accelerating the striker’s exit.

The sell-on fee from Calvert-Lewin would be a welcomed cash boost for Sheffield United

This news will be music to Sheffield United’s ears as they have some financial issues themselves, along with the uncertain future of the ownership. If the quoted figure of £37 million is accurate then the Blades could be in line to make approximately £7.4 million if they indeed have a 20% sell-on clause.

While a little over £7 million is certainly not an eye watering figure in today’s football world, this cash boost could come at the most ideal time for the Blades. There are rumours circulating that United are in negotiations to sign Peterborough United left-wingback Harrison Burrows for a fee in the region of £4 million. So, if Calvert-Lewin is sold, Sheffield United could use the fee they will receive from the sell-on clause and use it to cover the transfer fee for Burrows as well as his salary for the first year.
