In the latest episode of Big Decisions on Anfield Index, host Dave Davis and rival recon specialist Hari Sethi tackled some pressing topics: Liverpool’s January transfer priorities, the return of key players, and the surprising emergence of Chelsea as possible title contenders.
The discussion was wide-ranging but underpinned by one theme—Liverpool must seize their current position of strength. As the January window looms and title rivals emerge, Hari and Dave made their big calls.
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea have been a revelation this season, sitting just two points behind Liverpool despite playing a game more. Many would dismiss Chelsea as pretenders, but Hari Sethi warns Liverpool fans not to underestimate their challenge.
“Chelsea’s attack hides a multitude of sins,” said Hari. “They’re taking risks, scoring goals, and their sheer squad size is a huge advantage. They can completely rotate for the Conference League, which keeps their key players fresh.”
He highlighted key names such as Nicolas Jackson, who has “really improved,” and Cole Palmer, whose contributions have been invaluable. Despite concerns over defensive frailties and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, Hari believes Chelsea will “be there or thereabouts” unless their defence implodes.
Dave Davis agreed but noted that Chelsea’s inconsistency could hurt them. “They’ll batter teams one week, but you could see a silly 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth. They’ve got a blip in them.”
One of the most debated topics was Liverpool’s need to strengthen in January. Dave posed the question: “Is this the biggest window for Liverpool in years?” Hari’s answer was clear—Liverpool cannot afford complacency.
“We don’t do a lot of business in January, but when we have, it’s had huge impact,” Hari stated. He referenced Virgil van Dijk and Luis Díaz as past January successes that boosted the team mid-season.
Hari argued that a midfielder should be Liverpool’s priority, especially with players like Gravenberch, Mac Allister, and Curtis Jones carrying a heavy workload. “The midfield is so crucial to us. We need someone to safeguard the legs of the likes of Gravenberch and Dom Szoboszlai,” Hari explained.
Dave echoed this sentiment, saying Liverpool must “reinforce from a position of strength” to avoid injuries or fatigue derailing their title charge.
The conversation also turned to Diogo Jota, whose absence has been keenly felt. Despite limited appearances, Jota’s impact remains unmatched.
“Jota’s ability to take chances makes him vital,” Hari said. “He’s the player who, when he gets a chance, you know he’ll take it. That first touch and finish against Fulham—he just gave the keeper the eyes.”
The panel agreed that keeping Jota fit could be Liverpool’s difference-maker this season. As Dave summarised: “If Jota stays fit, he’s the glue that holds the attacking supporting cast together.”
The podcast concluded with a debate on who Liverpool’s true title rivals are. While Manchester City and Arsenal were mentioned, both Dave and Hari agreed Chelsea pose the most immediate threat.
“They’ve got goals, a deep squad, and no real pressure,” Hari said. “They’re flying under the radar right now, but I think we’ll be talking about them for a while.”
However, both also emphasised that Liverpool’s fate lies in their own hands. “Liverpool must be opportunistic,” Hari insisted. “Don’t let this chance slip.”
As Liverpool fans eagerly await January reinforcements, the Big Decisions podcast offered clear takeaways: Chelsea are contenders, Jota is crucial, and the January window could decide the title race. Liverpool must act decisively to remain ahead of their rivals.
