Ederson finished off a wonderful Atalanta team move to give them victory at San Siro, consolidating third place and effectively ruling Milan out of the hunt for Europe.
Both sides were coming off morale-boosting victories, as the Rossoneri beat Udinese 4-0 with their new 3-4-3 formation, while La Dea ended a run of three straight defeats with a victory over Bologna. Mike Maignan returned after a nasty head injury in Udine, but Kyle Walker, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Emerson Royal were still out of action. Sead Kolasinac, Stefan Posch, Gianluca Scamacca, Giorgio Scalvini and Marco Palestra didn’t make the trip, with Charles De Ketelaere, Odilon Kossounou and Rafael Toloi only fit for the bench, so Raoul Bellanova became a makeshift centre-back.
Theo Hernandez was offside when forcing a tricky save out of the on-rushing Marco Carnesecchi, while Mateo Retegui volleyed wide of the near post on a Mario Pasalic pull-back from the by-line.
Bellanova had to make a desperate sliding tackle when Tijjani Reijnders sent Rafael Leao running on the counter-attack from a Marten de Roon misplaced pass, while Leao slipped when trying to run onto a long Youssouf Fofana ball over the top.

Luka Jovic just failed to connect with a dangerous Alex Jimenez cross, but the striker had a huge opportunity just before half-time. He gathered with his back to goal from Jimenez, turned Bellanova and fired off target from 14 yards.
After the restart, Fofana surged forward from midfield and fed Reijnders, whose pull-back for Jovic was intercepted by Marten de Roon. Reijnders also saw a curler charged down, then the Leao roll across for Christian Pulisic was deflected just beyond him by Berat Djimsiti.
Fikayo Tomori also flashed a ball across the six-yard box just past Leao, while a Reijnders volley hit defenders. Milan were pouring forward, Juan Cuadrado taking one for the team as he hacked down Theo Hernandez to stop a dangerous attack.

Just as they seemed under pressure, Atalanta took the lead against the run of play with a wonderfully-worked move that started from their own half, culminating in Ademola Lookman standing up a cross to the back post, where Bellanova knocked it down for the Ederson diving header.

Milan were shaken and Lookman cut inside for a shot deflected over by Matteo Gabbia, but it really should’ve been 2-0 when Lookman rolled across for Retegui to come sliding in and somehow prod it wide from six yards off the inside of his ankle.

Joao Felix surged forward to get himself into a strong position only to get the finish horribly wrong from the edge of the area.
Atalanta had another huge chance to seal it in the final minute when Lookman went clear from a failed Milan corner, but Maignan stuck out a boot to parry the angled drive at the near post.
Reijnders also had a ferocious strike in stoppages, but it flew over the bar from distance.
