Fiorentina put an end to their crisis with a huge victory away to Lazio, as Yacine Adli and Lucas Beltran struck early, but Lazio almost equalised with the last kick of a fiery match.

This was a head-to-head for European places, though between teams in very different current form. The Aquile were fresh from Thursday’s 3-1 Europa League victory over Real Sociedad to guarantee Round of 16 access, but lost Nuno Tavares to injury, joining Matias Vecino, Manuel Lazzari and Patric on the treatment table. The Viola had just two draws from their last six Serie A games, while Danilo Cataldi, Andrea Colpani, transfer-listed Cristiano Biraghi and Jonathan Ikone didn’t make the trip.

It was Fiorentina all in their red away kit who took the lead, as Adam Marusic was caught napping by Rolando Mandragora playing out from the back, allowing Robin Gosens to cross from the left for the Yacine Adli volley that squirmed in off Ivan Provedel’s glove.

The Viola doubled their advantage soon after, as Michael Folorunsho sent Dodo down the right, riding a Luca Pellegrini sliding tackle to stand up the cross for a Lucas Beltran free header at the back post.

Matteo Guendouzi saw his strike charged down by Rolando Mandragora on the Gustav Isaksen pull-back, but Albert Gudmundsson almost scored an acrobatic volley on the Moise Kean knockdown that looped beyond Provedel to thump the upright.

Lazio had to make changes, introducing Pedro and Nicolò Rovella for the restart, pinning their opponents back with a Pedro shot deflected wide.

There was a bizarre incident when Adli was booked for time-wasting as he walked slowly off the pitch, kicked the ball angrily into the stands and received his second yellow card. He had already been substituted, so Fiorentina still had 11 men, but Adli will be suspended against Genoa.

Lazio threatened moments later when De Gea fumbled a Boulaye Dia header and it bounced off the upright, though he argued that Castellanos had fouled him.

Luca Ranieri threw himself in the path of a Dia strike, but while the hosts dominated possession, they hardly ever tested De Gea. There was also chaos in stoppages when the referee blew the whistle during a quick Lazio corner, feeling the ball had not gone out of play when it clearly had.

Lazio finally did get a goal back in added time, as the Castellanos cross was knocked down by Elseid Hysaj for the Adam Marusic header from close range, bending back De Gea’s glove.

The tension was sky high and Marco Baroni was sent off for dissent after sarcastically applauding Fiorentina time-wasting, then De Gea flying for a desperate one-handed save as the Marusic screamer was arrowing its way towards the far top corner.

Castellanos had penalty appeals for a push and Palladino was also sent off from the touchline in a chaotic finale.

With the last kick of the game, Pedro’s strike from the edge of the area bounced off the inside of the upright, rolled all the way along the goal-line and back out again as De Gea could only stand and watch.
