Hugo Souza, the Corinthians goalkeeper recently called up for Brazil's national team, is embracing both the magnitude of the moment and the comfort of familiar surroundings as he trains with the Seleção in São Paulo. With preparations underway for a decisive World Cup qualifying fixture against Paraguay, Brazil's squad has been utilizing Corinthians' training facility, offering Hugo a rare blend of club and international settings.
Participating fully in Carlo Ancelotti's demanding sessions, Hugo has relished sharing the pitch with national team stalwarts. He singled out Alisson as a role model, noting, "I have always admired Alisson, for his posture and technique. It’s incredible to share the field with him." Hugo also credited Taffarel for continued mentorship, even from afar, describing both goalkeepers as enduring inspirations throughout his development.
A highlight awaits on Tuesday, when Brazil faces Paraguay at Neo Química Arena—Hugo’s home ground in club football. The significance is not lost on him, as he looks forward to representing Brazil in the same stadium where Corinthians fans first embraced him. "I know how much that stadium pushes the team. Corinthians' fans have supported me since I arrived, and now I hope they bring that same energy for the national team," he said, inviting supporters to fill the stands. "It’s a unique chance to experience this at home."
On the qualification front, Brazil enters the fixture fourth in the South American standings, sitting on 22 points. A win over Paraguay, combined with a Uruguayan victory against Venezuela, could essentially secure Brazil’s place at the next World Cup. Until then, training continues at pace: the squad returns to the Corinthians facility on Sunday morning, with final tactical work scheduled at Neo Química Arena ahead of Tuesday night’s match.
Hugo's recent form with Corinthians and continued progress in training have positioned him well for this opportunity. As Brazil readies itself for a crucial contest, the goalkeeper’s journey reflects both personal achievement and the tight bond between club and country.
