Union St Gilloise can end a 90 year wait for their 12th Belgian top flight title on Sunday. If they side beat Gent, or just better/match the result of Club Brugge, they will win the title for the first time since 1935. Speaking to the media ahead of the game, the sides head coach Sébastien Pocognoli stressed that the side are approaching the game the same way they have approached all their matches this season. Pocognoli said ‘It would be a mistake to change everything, because the team has performed well in recent weeks’. The side will do some preparation for the game on Saturday as they do before any game, rather than taking this opportunity to rest the players.
They will be without one of their talismanic defenders in Kevin Mac Allister. The Argentine centre back is suspended after picking up a booking in the comprehensive win over Antwerp last weekend. Options to step into his place are the likes of Fedde Leysen and Ross Sykes. Former Accrington Stanley defender Sykes has come up big for Union in the past, scoring important goals for the side. It would be quite a moment for the 25-year-old English central defender if he is able to do the same this Sunday.
All the games will kick off at 6.30pm Belgian time. Club Brugge travel to Antwerp for their final game of the season.
