City legend Jill Scott has paid tribute to the current England team after the Lionesses euphorically won the 2025 European Championships.

Sarina Wiegman’s side, which featured Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp from the start and Jess Park and Khiara Keating among the substitutes, beat Spain 3-1 on penalties in a thrilling final.

The historic triumph set the seal on a summer to savour after England battled through to the showpiece and became only the second nation to retain the major trophy.

For Scott, who helped her nation triumph three years ago, she believes every player gave everything they had to win in Switzerland.

“I can’t believe it, you never write this team off. I just think they’re absolutely incredible,” she declared on BBC One's live post-match broadcast.

“I look at this team and they’ve all been on their own individual journeys to get to this point. You look at the gold medal and think about everything that has gone into it.

“People speak about 2022, and I’ve said before it took a lot to win it, but for them to go out there today and win it with a target on their back, it’s taken everything.

“They should be so proud of themselves.”

After finishing second in Group D and reaching the semi-finals with a penalties win over Sweden, England made the final in dramatic circumstances with an extra time victory over Italy.

Trailing deep into second-half stoppage time, Michelle Agyemang equalised on the cusp of full-time before Chloe Kelly scored in the 119th minute to send her nation to the showpiece.

The Lionesses then had to come from behind against Spain with Alessia Russo heading home after half-time to level before England held their nerve in the shootout to prevail.

And Scott says she’s delighted for all of those who contributed to the success this summer.

She added: “They’re just so determined, they came up against a Spain team who were enjoying a great run of form and played fantastic football. But they were so resilient.

“You see at the end Lauren James and Lucy Bronze are limping, but they are willing to give everything to play for their country and who wins the Euros twice in a row?

“It just doesn’t happen, I’m elated for them all.”
