Scotland fans attack Rangers players in disgraceful display

While our piece earlier on John Souttar and how his excellent performance earned rave reviews was most certainly positive, Rangers and all we stand for was once again smeared by Scotland fans who also disrespected Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

From several first-hand reports, Souttar was booed and insulted with bigoted terms every time he touched the ball, if not by the whole stadium, while club team mate Connor Barron was also booed during his warm up.

If that wasn’t bad enough, it was quite blatant how badly Ronaldo was being booed, in what was a remarkable smack of disrespect for a legendary football player, who only earlier that day had gone out of his way to interact with Scottish kids and give his autograph to dozens.

Are we the world’s biggest Ronaldo fans on Ibrox Noise? No, but we’re not into his former nemesis Lionel Messi much either, but both do deserve a level of respect for what they have done for the game, for what they continue to do, and the simple act of getting off the team bus and going straight for the kids who were desperate for his autograph showed his class, even if he didn’t seem in the best mood at the time!

As for Rangers’ players, we’ve come to expect this nastiness, this toxicity from fans of the national team, who simply cannot get over (their view of) 2012 and continue to be vile to anyone from Rangers representing their country.

Mind you, these are the same fans who happily boo opposition national anthems as well, the small-minded disrespectful nature they have really isn’t that surprising.

It is however always disappointing, and even back in Ibrox Noise’s Scotland-supporting days, we paid little attention to Celtic players plying their trade for the national side. They were Scotland players, even if we maybe celebrated their goals for the NT a little less vigorously than we did Rangers players.

Either way, the toxic nature of Scotland fans, booing Ronaldo and all Rangers representatives really is rather stuck in the past, but shows no sign of going away any time soon.
