The Sheffield United boss has made his displeasure clear as their clash with Swansea City approaches.
Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles has voiced his frustration over a lack of new signings at Bramall Lane ahead of the Blades' clash with Swansea City this weekend.
The Spanish head coach’s poor mood was revealed by BBC Sheffield journalist Adam Oxley via his official X account.
It follows warnings from the new Blades boss that he would be upset if more players from his squad were sold before strengthening this summer, with Wrexham potentially eyeing a move for defender Jack Robinson.
Football League World exclusively revealed last month that Selles would be working with a restricted transfer budget this summer – it appears that fact is beginning to bite.
According to Oxley’s report, Selles revealed in the recent press conference that he still requires three to five Championship-ready signings.
To make matters worse, and likely the source of Selles’ frustration, he confirmed that none are expected to arrive before United face the Swans this Saturday at the Swansea.com Stadium.
The only shining light delivered by the journalist was that there are no fresh injury concerns.
But the manager seems to believe it will take more than keeping the current squad together to arrest their poor start to the season, with fresh faces required.
As revealed in FLW’s exclusive in July, this summer was never likely to be one of heavy spending for the Blades.
And that is what has come to pass so far, with young duo Ehije Ukaki and Mihail Polendakov arriving from Bulgarian football for minimal fees.
The only other new players Selles has been given to work with is loanees Tyler Bindon, Louie Barry and Djibril Soumare, as the club prepare to go in search of their first win of the new season this weekend.
Given the club are in the second year of their Premier League parachute payments, questions will undoubtedly be asked, not least by Selles, about why they’re having to work on a shoestring budget.
The season, and Selles’ tenure, could scarcely have got off to a worse start.
Their Championship account for the season opened with a 4-1 hammering by Bristol City, despite registering 20 shots on the Robins’ goal, and letting in four of their opposition’s five shots on target.
The game ended with Selles berating his players on the pitch, a visible message to their home crowd that the new boss didn’t find the performance acceptable.
He backed that up on BBC Radio Sheffield, admitting: "There is a lot of things to improve, it's not good enough from anyone starting from my side."
Things didn’t get any better in the Carabao Cup, crashing out of the competition in the first round against newly promoted Birmingham City, despite fielding a relatively strong XI containing Callum O’Hare, Robinson and £10m man Tom Cannon.
Gus Hamer came on and rocketed a sublime strike into the back of the net from the halfway line to level the game, but Jay Stansfield confirmed the Blades’ fate in the final few minutes.
It’s not the start United or Selles would have wanted, and with the new boss clearly frustrated with his superiors, it’s a situation that could threaten to boil over as the end of the transfer window nears.
