Manchester United must give Jaydan Kamason a chance to shine in the wake of Diogo Dalot’s injury.
Ruben Amorim confirmed yesterday in his pre-match press conference that Dalot will certainly miss the next few matches and could well be out for the remainder of the season with a calf problem.
This is problematic as the Portugal international has been an ever-present in the side. He has played 51 matches this season in all competitions, to go alongside the 50 he participated in last season for the Red Devils.
Whilst he has not always matched the form of the 2023/2024 season, he has still been an integral part of the team.
Nonetheless, despite the negativity of injuries, it always throws up the chance for someone else to grab the baton and convince Amorim that they are the player who deserves a shot in the starting line up.
For the Europa League semi-final against Athletic Club, it is clear that Amorim will take as few risks as possible, due to how imperative the matches are for the season.
Therefore, Noussair Mazraoui is likely to switch to the right wing back role and the returning Matthijs de Ligt could start alongside Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire in the centre back position. In addition, Luke Shaw’s return could see him start on the left and Yoro shift to the right centre back role.
While Mazraoui lacks guile in attack, he can carry the ball well and will be solid defensively against a tough team.
Amad is also scheduled to return for the second leg at least, so he could also possibly play as a right wing back to cover Dalot.
The Premier League is a different story, however. Amorim has already admitted that United will play the kids in the league to ensure their stars are rested for the Europa League semi-finals.
The Peoples Person has already highlighted some potential academy players who could be waiting in the wings and one who deserves a chance to shine is Kamason.
Tyler Fredricson and Harry Amass got the opportunity to start last weekend against Wolverhampton Wanderers and grabbed their chance with both hands.
United have always been about giving young players a chance, so they should certainly use the relatively pressure free environment of the last five games of the Premier League to blood in a youngster.
Man United under 18 boss Adam Lawrence has claimed that there is much “excitement” at the club about the potential of Kamason.
The coaches at Carrington are also said to be confident that Amorim will call up the young defender before the season is out to help solve the wingback issue.
He has played 31 matches this season for various youth groups, scoring two goals and providing six assists.
One of his finest moments came scoring against Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup quarter-final victory.
The New York Times claims that his goal against the Gunners demonstrates his “directness and dynamism” that is demanded of an Amorim wingback.
Adam Lawrence has described Kamason as a footballer who “plays predominantly as a full-back, but he likes to get forward and can affect the game higher up the pitch.”
Therefore, he will already have the defensive nous to his game to be an all-round threat for the first team.
He will surely make some errors and look raw at times, but the other side is that he could impress and get a chance to show his worth in the upcoming pre-season. Having seen plenty of United youngsters make their mark recently, he would also back himself to take his chance at senior level.
