Ruben Amorim has expressed sympathy towards up to 200 Manchester United staff set to lose their jobs as more cost-cutting measures hit, stressing that better performances on the pitch are vital to support the lifeblood of the overall club.

Following on from 250 job losses last summer, United made a public statement on Monday regarding between 150 and 200 further redundancies to come, to improve the financial picture after alarmingly recording losses in each of the last five seasons.

Amorim, who has struggled to strike a balance between implementing his core tactical ideas and chasing short-term results, suggested at a press conference on Tuesday that part of the problem has been a "lack of success" in a football sense not driving the club as a whole forward.

As one example of how that might be relevant, United have frittered away millions in the transfer market and on enormous contracts handed to underperforming players, at the same time as regularly failing to qualify for the Champions League, which is hugely lucrative.

"We have to address all the problems in the club but one important piece of this moment is to understand how we get this situation and it has to do a lot with the lack of success of the football team. We are the engine," Amorim said.

"I just want to help improve the team, improve the players to have success."

The head coach added it is "hard for everybody" to witness the struggles.

"They see their friends and teammates losing their job, again we have to focus on what I can do to help the club in this moment and we as a club have to understand what we did wrong to get to this situation," he continued. "We have to think of solutions in this moment.

"It's hard enough [to win games], we know this year was really hard for everybody and we did as a club a lot of changes and when you are doing the changes, if you have a football team that is doing well and winning games, in a certain way it's easier for the fans to feel the changes."
