Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim gave a humorous response to Gary Neville’s criticism of his team’s display versus Manchester City.
While hardly a classic, United showed good tactical solidity to nullify a poor City side and certainly had some chances to win the game, as they pushed for a winner in the second half.
The game ended in a drab 0-0, with both teams seemingly content with a point at full-time.
Commenting on the match, the Sky Sports pundit Neville was scathing of the lack of fight in United’s effort versus their local rivals.
“I think they all walked off thinking ‘we’re ok here we got away without making a mistake’. That was the sort of type of game. It was really disappointing.”
“I apologise for my co-commentary actually, I think I let it get to me. I was boring on there as well, drab as well. Honestly, the whole game.”
Speaking to the press after the match, Ruben Amorim drew laughter from the journalists present when he suggested Neville was always complaining about something.
When asked about Neville’s words he retorted, “I understand that Gary Neville is critical about everything so I understand that part.”
He admitted that neither his side nor Pep Guardiola’s team were anything close to their best this season and that this certainly contributed to the cautious nature of the match.
“Then I understand that we are in the moment that we are doing the worst season in history. Manchester City won everything in the past, (but) this season is struggling.”
“So we are not in the best moments to give the best spectacle to every fan. We are not fighting for the big things so of course it’s different but you have to look at the context of the game.”
He also stated that he understood the reaction of numerous former United players turned pundits as they “were fighting every time for the titles so it’s a different context.”
Amorim himself was also far from happy with the performance of his team as he also highlighted after the match that his side need to improve in every aspect in the future.
