Norwich City defender Jonathan Tomkinson is attracting plenty of attention across League One and some Championship clubs, with the 23-year-old out of contract this summer at Carrow Road.

The centre-back found it difficult to forge a place in the Canaries squad after graduating from their academy, making just three first-team appearances, and it was no surprise to see him confirmed as one of the 16 players to be leaving Carrow Road this summer at the end of his contract.

Loan spells at Stevenage, Bradford City and, most recently, Ross County, have the American ready to make that step into regular senior football at whatever club he signs for.

A host of League One clubs are interested in the towering centre-half, namely Stockport County, Reading and Rotherham United, as well as Championship side Portsmouth.

FLW's Rotherham United fan pundit, Tom Eyre, hopes that it's his side who secure Tomkinson's services, as he believes he could be exactly what they need if Cameron Humphreys were to depart this summer.

Speaking to Football League World, Eyre admitted that he didn't know much about Tomkinson at first, but after watching him play, he is eager for his side to bring him in.

"In my personal opinion, I haven't heard much about him," Eyre admitted.

"But after I saw the article FLW put out, I did a bit of research on him.

"He seems to be a creditable ball-playing centre half, which is good. He played on the right side of the middle three at Ross County, and that fits what we need to a tee.

"We'll have Zak Jules on the left of our back three, we need someone to replace Sean Raggett in the middle for when he gets injured, and we need someone new on the right side.

"Cam Humphreys would be great, but it's not looking likely that he's going to sign the contract extension we've offered him, so it looks like he's leaving on a free.

"So if we can get in someone younger, who Hamshaw wants, who played well last season in the Scottish league...it's a very good signing in many regards.

"I just hope we can fight off the other teams involved."

Jonathan Tomkinson may have big shoes to fill at Rotherham United

As Eyre pointed out, if Jonathan Tomkinson were to be brought in on a free transfer, it's likely that he will replace Cameron Humphreys, who may be on his way out of the ASSEAL New York Stadium on a similar deal.

A new offer was tabled for the 26-year-old former Manchester City youth player in April, and Millers fans remain in the dark about whether he's accepted it or not. Some fans, such as Eyres, are preparing to start the new season without him.

Therefore, Tomkinson may likely have to replace a man who made 40 League One appearances last season, and was one of the bright sparks in what was a wholly disappointing return to League One for Rotherham.

The promise of immediate game time may end up swaying the 23-year-old to South Yorkshire, and if it does, Rotherham fans will already have high hopes for the former Norwich academy product.
