It’s the sort of rumour that starts as a whisper and then grows into a low grumble of concern around Anfield. Andy Robertson, Liverpool’s indefatigable left-back, may be edging towards the exit door. At 31, and with just a year left on his deal, the Scot is reportedly a top target for Atletico Madrid, and the price tag being floated is causing more than a few raised eyebrows on Merseyside.

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Atletico are plotting a move for Robertson this summer. But not just any move – one they hope could come via a low fee, or, in the most staggering twist, a free transfer.
“Atletico Madrid are looking for a left-back,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “The dream target, the top target, for the left-back position is Andy Robertson at Liverpool. From what I understand, Robertson already opened his doors to the possibility. Andy Robertson will be keen to move to Atletico Madrid, try to move to Spain.”
That alone may jolt Liverpool fans, but what followed hits harder. “Atletico Madrid hope to get a deal done for free, with the player leaving Liverpool on good terms with a green light from the club or with a small fee.”

Liverpool, a club with one of the sharpest recruitment and sales operations in European football, giving away a proven performer for nothing? It would be a shock move – especially for a player still under contract.
The growing suggestion is that Liverpool are preparing for life beyond Robertson. The likely arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth signals a shift, and with Robertson potentially slipping down the pecking order under Arne Slot, a summer departure becomes more plausible.

Robertson’s agent representation comes from PLG Agency, whose ties to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s family raise echoes of Jordan Henderson’s unexpected exit last year, when similar contract termination whispers surfaced.
If Robertson does push for a move to Atletico Madrid, the emphasis now shifts to Liverpool’s handling of the situation. He has given the club years of relentless energy and silverware. But allowing him to leave for a small fee, or worse, for free, would be an act of generosity not befitting Liverpool’s calculated business model.
There’s admiration for the player and respect for his service. But if Robertson is to leave, a proper fee should follow him out the door.
