Last week saw Rico Lewis linked with a surprise move to Nottingham Forest. Jack Gaughan reported that Forest were eager to add Lewis to their squad. Speaking after Manchester City’s win over Wolves, Lewis declared that he had no interest in leaving Manchester City. Now it has emerged that the England international has agreed on a contract extension with Manchester City. That is excellent news as Rico Lewis figures to be a key player in Manchester City’s future.
Jack Gaughan has reported for the Daily Mail that Rico Lewis is set to sign a 5 year contract extension with Manchester City. Furthermore, it is also reported that Lewis will receive a pay rise with his new deal. Lastly, Lewis’ contract extension ends any chance of Nottingham Forest signing the England international.
Rico Lewis will now be a key component of Manchester City’s rebuild. At 20 years of age, Lewis has his best years ahead of him as a player. The versatile full-back has become an important member of Pep Guardiola’s squad. He can play as a right-back or as a midfielder, and that ability sees him regularly given a prominent role for his team when he starts. Lewis often inverts into midfield from right-back.
That particular role suits the strengths of his game. That ability of Lewis drifr into midfield led to Manchester City’s opening goal at Molineux at the weekend. Lewis took up a dangerous position on the edge of the Wolves area and was expertly picked out by Tijjani Reijnders. Lewis played a sublime ball to Erling Haaland for the Norwegian international to tap into an empty net at the back post. That snippet of play showed exactly what Rico Lewis adds to the Manchester City starting lineup.
As a player who rose through the Manchester City youth set up it is great to see Lewis commit his future to the club. Alongside Nico O’Reilly, James Trafford, Phil Foden and Oscar Bobb it is great to see a young player who has grown up at City reach the top. Now Rico Lewis is set to be a key player now and in the future for Manchester City. That is great news and how he grows as a player will be fascinating to watch unfold.
