To date the Reds have spent £252.2m, which is the most in the Premier League by £12m, which Chelsea in second and Arsenal £48.6m behind them in third. A lot of money has changed hands.

But with the possibility of spending a British transfer record fee on a deal for Alexander Isak lurking in the distance, the team's need for a centre-back might be forgotten and left until next season.

If that were to happen, then Arne Slot is said to have a number of internal solutions to hand.

Short-term solutions to the centre-back crisis

According to Gregg Evans at The Athletic, we've been getting inventive with our defensive options.

In their latest report, he said: "Centre-back is an area that remains a little light following Jarell Quansah's exit to Bayer Leverkusen. Ideally, Slot would like another defender so he has strong competition for places, and a number of young players have been considered.

"The alternative is turning to either Ryan Gravenberch or Wataru Endo to fill in if Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate or Joe Gomez are not available."

Naturally, the short-term solutions are using Liverpool's defensive midfielders, which itself causes a number of issues for the team's engine room, but these are not the most favourable of options.

The fee that the Reds received from Leverkusen for Quansah essentially made a deal for the Englishman too good to ignore, when Slot might have been hoping to keep hold of him.

But the situation is what it is now and while a new signing is ideal, we may be forced to compromise.
