According to a report by Sky Sports, Newcastle United have “opened negotiations” with Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani, who was signed by the French champions for £76m. This move comes after a frustrating summer in which several attacking targets slipped through Eddie Howe’s grasp.
Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig is the latest to reject the Magpies, instead opting for Manchester United. Other names, including Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, and Hugo Ekitike, have all joined Premier League rivals, leaving Newcastle scrambling with just a week until the new season kicks off.
Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that the 26-year-old “complete” attacker is “high” on Newcastle’s shortlist. Howe is also pursuing Porto’s Samu Aghehowa, with both players viewed as potential solutions to their striker shortage.
The urgency is heightened by the uncertain future of Alexander Isak, who has “announced his intentions to leave” amid interest from Liverpool. With Callum Wilson already gone to West Ham United on a free transfer, Newcastle could be forced into a double signing to secure depth and quality up front.
Kolo Muani has an impressive record with nine goals in 31 caps for France. A loan move to Juventus in January reignited his form, producing eight goals in Turin. Despite limited opportunities at PSG, his performances for club and country underline his potential to be a decisive force in the Premier League.
After finishing fifth last season and lifting the League Cup — their first silverware in 70 years — Newcastle are looking to strengthen ahead of another European campaign.
From a Newcastle fan’s perspective, this report is both exciting and concerning. On one hand, targeting a player of Kolo Muani’s calibre shows ambition. He’s quick, technically sharp, and has the versatility to play across the front line. That adaptability could be vital, especially if Isak departs.
However, there’s an underlying worry about the club’s recent track record in landing big attacking targets. Sesko’s rejection — and the fact that other key options have gone to Premier League rivals — suggests that Newcastle still face challenges in competing with England’s established elite when it comes to transfers.
The potential double move for Kolo Muani and Aghehowa feels like a statement, but there’s also risk. Spending big after missing out on first-choice targets can lead to overpaying or signing players who aren’t a perfect fit. Kolo Muani’s PSG struggles raise questions, but his Juventus form shows he can thrive when trusted.
Ultimately, fans want decisive action. With Champions League football secured, there’s an expectation for the club to match that achievement with genuine squad depth. If Howe can pull off this signing — and keep Isak — it could transform Newcastle’s attacking options for the season ahead.
