Newcastle Close in on Elanga: £55m Move Edges Closer

Newcastle United look set to complete their first signing of the summer, with Anthony Elanga on the verge of a £55million switch from Nottingham Forest. As first reported by Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope, the Magpies have returned with an improved offer following a rejected £45m bid last week — and now appear close to landing a player Eddie Howe has admired for some time.

Elanga Emerges as Howe’s Priority

At 23, Anthony Elanga represents a blend of raw potential and Premier League experience, having contributed six goals and 11 assists for Forest last season. Those numbers, combined with his blistering pace and attacking intent, have made him a long-term target for Newcastle’s boss.

“Elanga, 23, has been a long-term target of Eddie Howe and there was a failed approach to sign him last summer.” That pursuit now looks to be paying off, with Newcastle reportedly confident that personal terms will not pose an obstacle. However, Aston Villa are said to be keeping a close eye on proceedings, which may yet complicate the final stages.

What Elanga Offers Newcastle

The Sweden international brings a dynamic threat from the right flank, and Eddie Howe sees even more untapped potential in him. “The Newcastle boss is an admirer of the right-winger’s pace and output… but he also sees scope for big improvement in the Sweden international.”

That quote reflects Howe’s philosophy of development, and Elanga — still only 23 — fits the profile of a player who could evolve further under Howe’s tutelage. With 82 Premier League appearances under his belt, the winger has already proven he can handle the rigours of English football.

First Signing of the Summer, But More to Come?

If finalised, Elanga would be Newcastle’s first signing of this transfer window, and the move would also trigger a clause involving his former club, Manchester United, who are due 15% of any profit made from the sale. Having signed for Forest in 2023 for £15m, the £55m fee represents a significant return for the Midlands club.

Still, with FFP restrictions rumoured to be in play, it will be intriguing to see whether this deal curtails further movement or sparks a busy summer at St James’ Park.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Newcastle fan’s point of view, this deal ticks a lot of boxes. While £55million may raise some eyebrows, especially for a player with just six goals last season, Elanga’s upside is significant. His electric pace and ability to stretch defences fit Howe’s high-energy system perfectly. The numbers — six goals and 11 assists — suggest he’s already contributing, but what excites fans more is what he could become.

There’s also the fact that this is a statement of intent. Newcastle are targeting younger, Premier League-proven talent with room to grow — rather than older names on big wages. It’s a sustainable model, and Elanga’s work ethic seems to align with the club’s values.

That said, fans will be expecting at least one more attacking addition, particularly on the left or centrally. If Elanga is the first of several strategic signings, then the summer window may yet prove transformative for the Magpies.
