Manchester United have pulled off a decisive move in the transfer market, agreeing a deal in principle with RB Leipzig for 22-year-old striker Benjamin Sesko. As reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, the deal is worth €76.5million (£66.4m) with €8.5m in add-ons, and Sesko is expected to undergo medical tests imminently.
This is a major statement from United, who moved quickly and efficiently to beat Premier League rivals Newcastle United to the Slovenian’s signature. Despite Newcastle having Champions League football on offer this season, Sesko has opted for the Old Trafford project — a decision that has sent a buzz around Manchester.

United’s strategy paid off. Newcastle made the first serious move, tabling an offer worth €75m and €5m in bonuses, later increasing it to €82.5m plus €2.5m in add-ons. However, despite Leipzig accepting that proposal, it was clear that Sesko had his heart set on United.
“The Old Trafford club then finalised the operation in a relatively smooth and fast manner.”
United’s final package – a slightly lower guaranteed fee than Newcastle – appears to have been enough to convince Leipzig, particularly given the forward’s preference.
Sesko’s goal record speaks volumes: 21 goals in all competitions last season, and 39 goals and eight assists in 87 appearances since joining Leipzig from sister club Red Bull Salzburg in 2023. At 22, his physical profile, technical skill, and clinical edge make him an ideal addition to United’s forward line.
Sesko joins a reshaped United attack already bolstered by Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, as the club looks to offer more firepower and tactical flexibility under their evolving structure.
“Newcastle provided Champions League football… but it became clear Sesko was leaning towards their Premier League rivals.”
With a proven Bundesliga pedigree and Champions League experience, Sesko could be the striker to lead United’s frontline for years to come.
This move feels both significant and symbolic. Beating Newcastle — a side many now consider a serious rival in terms of ambition and European aspirations — to one of Europe’s most coveted young strikers is a morale-boosting achievement. The fact that Sesko chose United, despite Newcastle’s Champions League carrot, suggests that the club’s allure and long-term vision still carry weight.
Sesko’s arrival complements the recent additions of Cunha and Mbeumo, and suggests a clear plan to rotate and challenge Rasmus Højlund rather than rely on him solely. With Sesko’s 6’5″ frame, pace, and direct style, he brings a different dimension to the attack — something that could prove vital against low blocks and in transition-heavy matches.
Fans will be intrigued to see how the manager integrates him, especially with a likely return to a pressing, vertical approach. There’s also cautious optimism: the price tag is significant, and while Sesko’s Bundesliga record is impressive, the Premier League presents new challenges.
Still, this feels like a proactive, well-thought-out signing — not just a headline grabber. If United get the best out of Sesko, they may finally have the modern number nine they’ve lacked since Robin van Persie.
