Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool Gamble Nearing Its End – Milan and Premier League Clubs Circle

Liverpool’s curious Federico Chiesa experiment looks increasingly like a brief and unfulfilled chapter in both club and player history. Arriving at Anfield with pedigree, flair, and the sheen of a European Championship winner, Chiesa now finds himself edging towards the exit door after what has been an undeniably underwhelming debut season under head coach Arne Slot.

CaughtOffside reports that “Chiesa is emerging as a target for AC Milan, along with three unnamed Premier League clubs,” while Liverpool appear open to offers in the region of €25-30m. The valuation feels both pragmatic and quietly revealing—a tacit admission that this high-profile move simply hasn’t clicked.

Chiesa’s Struggles in a Red Shirt

It’s not been for lack of talent. On his day, Chiesa remains an electrifying winger—direct, technically sharp, capable of turning a game in a moment. But Slot’s system has seemingly never found room for him. The former Juventus star has battled to impose himself on matches, and despite occasional flashes—like a well-taken goal against Newcastle—there’s been no consistent platform for success.

CaughtOffside noted, “Chiesa had been keen to give his time at Liverpool more of a chance, but it now seems very clear that it’s just not working out for the 27-year-old.” It’s an honest, sobering reality that echoes loudly in the terraces. Few signings arrive with such anticipation and depart with such little imprint.

Serie A Return or Premier League Stay?

There’s little surprise in the suggestion that Serie A giants like AC Milan are ready to welcome Chiesa back to familiar soil. His style—suited to more tactical, possession-focused football—always seemed more at home in Italy than in the Premier League’s frantic chaos.

Yet the Premier League interest complicates things. “Sources with a close understanding of the situation have revealed to CaughtOffside that Chiesa is emerging as a target… along with three unnamed Premier League clubs.” For Chiesa, that might offer a final shot at English redemption—albeit outside of the elite-level pressure he’s faced at Anfield.

Liverpool’s Forward Line Leaves No Room for Sentiment

With Mohamed Salah, Luis Díaz, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo all ahead in the pecking order, Slot simply doesn’t need to keep Chiesa around to make up the numbers. His system values flexibility and pressing from the front, areas where the Italian hasn’t entirely convinced.

CaughtOffside summed it up bluntly: “Slot already has plenty of other options in his attack… so there certainly seems little need to keep hold of Chiesa.” The timing, then, feels right—for both parties. Liverpool can recoup a fair portion of their investment, and Chiesa can restart his career away from the Merseyside spotlight.

No Ill Will – Just a Mismatch of Styles and Timing

There’s no sense of bitterness in how this transfer has unravelled. It’s more an issue of chemistry and fit. Chiesa’s qualities remain undisputed, but they haven’t married well with the evolution of Liverpool’s tactical identity under Slot.

Fans may feel let down, not because of anything Chiesa has done wrong, but because the potential was so vivid when he arrived. As CaughtOffside note, “Some Reds fans will undoubtedly be disappointed that this deal couldn’t work out, however, as Chiesa looked like an exciting addition when he first joined.”

In the grander Liverpool tapestry, his name may fade quickly. But there’s still time for a second act—perhaps in red and black in Milan, or under different lights in the Premier League.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

This situation feels like one we’ve seen before. A big-name foreign signing comes in with plenty of promise, but just never finds rhythm within Liverpool’s framework. Under Klopp, perhaps Chiesa might’ve had a clearer brief—a defined role on the counter or in a high-pressing unit. Under Slot, whose structure is arguably more fluid and tactically demanding, Chiesa’s lack of defined purpose stood out.

The reported €25-30m asking price feels reasonable—enough to preserve value but not enough to deter potential suitors. There’s little appetite for keeping a fifth-choice winger when the club is seeking midfield reinforcements and potentially a Salah replacement in the longer term.

While it’s unfortunate things didn’t pan out, there’s no animosity towards Chiesa. Fans are likely to reflect on this as a low-risk, low-reward move that didn’t quite pay off—especially with attackers like Gakpo and Jota ahead of him.

From a squad-planning perspective, offloading Chiesa opens up a non-homegrown slot, frees up wages, and gives the club more manoeuvrability in the summer window. In that sense, it’s simply smart business.
