Liverpool’s highly-rated youngster Stefan Bajcetic faces a critical decision that could define the next stage of his career. As a world-class prospect, the 20-year-old is currently on loan at RB Salzburg, where his performances have been closely monitored by his parent club and national team selectors. However, his next move may upset Salzburg’s hierarchy, as Bajcetic appears torn between competing in the Club World Cup or representing Spain in the U21 European Championship.
Bajcetic’s loan to RB Salzburg has been productive, offering him a platform to refine his skills and play regular first-team football. The Austrian side, led by Liverpool’s former assistant manager Pep Lijnders, has already secured qualification for the Club World Cup. Salzburg are eager to extend Bajcetic’s temporary stay into the summer, allowing him to feature in the prestigious FIFA competition.
However, Liverpool, who are not participating in the revamped tournament, are reportedly open to welcoming Bajcetic back earlier if he chooses to return. This creates a crossroads for the midfielder, whose ambitions extend beyond domestic and club football.

Bajcetic’s comments have made it clear that his heart is set on representing Spain in the U21 European Championship. “Being on loan at Salzburg and Liverpool not going to the Club World Cup, I have the option to choose between returning to Liverpool or playing the Club World Cup with Salzburg,” he explained.
“If I go back to Liverpool, I have the option to come to the U21 European Championship and that would be something I would really like to do. I missed the Olympics and European Championship last year due to injury, I have never been to a tournament like this with the national team, I am really looking forward to it.”
This burning desire stems from a missed opportunity to participate in major international tournaments due to previous injuries. Representing Spain would not only be a personal milestone but also a chance to cement his reputation as a world-class prospect.
Bajcetic’s rise to prominence began during the 2022-23 season when, as an 18-year-old, he made 11 Premier League appearances and netted his first goal for Liverpool. His composure and intelligence in the number six role quickly caught the eye. In January 2023, he was named Liverpool’s Player of the Month, with a standout performance in the Merseyside derby against Everton.
After that game, Mohamed Salah lavished praise on the midfielder, stating, “He’s a great player and person, he always tries to work hard. Since he started playing for us, he has been our best player maybe, so hopefully he keeps that confidence and keeps going.”
Unfortunately, Bajcetic’s momentum was disrupted by a calf injury that sidelined him for much of the following season. Under the guidance of Arne Slot, Liverpool opted to send him on loan to ensure regular playing time, a move that has kept his development on track.
As Bajcetic approaches this pivotal juncture, the balance between club loyalty and personal ambition hangs delicately in the air. Salzburg may feel frustrated by his apparent inclination towards the U21 European Championship, but Bajcetic’s focus on his long-term growth as a player is understandable.
The decision will ultimately reveal whether Bajcetic prioritises his development as a world-class prospect in the international arena or opts to seize a rare chance at the Club World Cup. Whatever the outcome, Liverpool will be keeping a close watch on their emerging star as he continues to establish himself as a future leader in the number six role.
