Report: Isak Transfer Decision Hinges on Newcastle’s Next Move

Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport has reported that Alexander Isak’s Newcastle United future is hanging in the balance – and Liverpool could be the decisive factor. The Swedish striker is prepared to either reintegrate at St James’ Park or sign a new deal, but only if he hears directly from Liverpool that a move to Anfield is off the table.
According to Jacobs, “Isak is waiting to see if Liverpool bid again,” with the Reds keeping an eye on the situation. While the Premier League champions have not completely walked away, they will only place a second offer if Newcastle give them encouragement to proceed.
Liverpool have already tested Newcastle’s resolve with a £110 million offer – but were met with a swift and firm rejection. Newcastle sources insist the bid fell short of their valuation, believed to be in the region of £120m. Liverpool insiders counter that the offer was “intended as a starting point” and should not be seen as derisory.
The situation mirrors Liverpool’s unsuccessful pursuit of Anthony Gordon last summer, where Newcastle initially indicated willingness to negotiate before pivoting after other sales balanced their books.
Newcastle’s transfer activity could indirectly decide Isak’s fate. Jacobs reports that “if Newcastle can add two new attackers this month, Isak may yet be allowed to leave.” Yoane Wissa of Brentford is a top target, while Samu Aghehowa, Nicolas Jackson, and Arnaud Kalimuendo have also been explored.

Midfielder Bilal El Khannous is another name of interest, particularly given his €26m release clause following Leicester’s relegation.
The Isak situation is complicated by the player’s dissatisfaction at not being offered a new contract last summer, despite having four years left at the time. Newcastle’s stance then was shaped by their PSR constraints. With just a week before the Premier League season begins, “all parties appear to want clarity… sooner rather than later.”
From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, this feels like one of those transfer sagas that could easily go to the wire. The fact that Isak is actively waiting for a sign from Liverpool is telling – it suggests the player is genuinely interested in the move, not just passively listening to rumours.
Liverpool’s initial £110m bid shows they mean business, and while Newcastle’s rejection was decisive, the gap between the two valuations isn’t unbridgeable. In the current market, £10m is hardly a chasm. The question is whether Newcastle’s recruitment drive delivers the reinforcements needed to green-light a sale.
From an Anfield point of view, Isak fits the profile perfectly – technically gifted, mobile, and proven in the Premier League. The only hesitation could be the timing; starting the season without him would be manageable, but the later a deal is done, the harder it is for him to integrate.
Supporters will also remember the Anthony Gordon situation, which left Liverpool frustrated. No fan wants to see history repeat itself, with weeks of negotiation leading to nothing. If Newcastle are willing to do business, Liverpool need to move quickly and decisively. If not, clarity now is better than another month of speculation.
A deal of this scale is always complex, but the feeling is that if Liverpool make one final push – and Newcastle land their attacking targets – this could still happen before the window shuts.
