Rangers are certain to strengthen their right-back areas in the January transfer window.

The Gers may consider several options, and former defender Nathan Patterson could return to Ibrox on loan in January.

According to the Daily Mail, the 23-year-old is keen to secure regular game time and could leave Everton on loan next month.

James Tavernier was superb against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League clash at Ibrox on Thursday night, but the Rangers skipper has been criticized for his form this season.

Nana Kasanwirjo is likely to miss the rest of the season due to knee surgery, so Philippe Clement will likely look to bring in a new right-back on a short-term deal.

Getting Nathan Patterson back at Ibrox would be massive for Rangers

Patterson joined the Toffees from Rangers for a fee of around £11 million three years ago.

His time at the Premier League club has been blighted by injuries, and he has dropped down the pecking order under Sean Dyche.

He has recently returned to full fitness, and several Championship clubs are vying for his signature on loan.

Given Everton’s league position, Dyche will not want Patterson to move elsewhere next month, but at the same time, he is not getting games either.

Ashley Young has played at right-back, while Seamus Coleman has recently returned to full fitness as well.

Therefore, Patterson, who earns £28k-per-week, might consider moving elsewhere and playing regularly to get back into the Scotland squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

Rangers would love to have him back. He was one of the club’s most prodigiously gifted talents, and the Gers sold him to Everton for a high profit.

Patterson could be tempted to return to his old club, where he would be welcomed by the fans. He knows the club inside out, and it could be the right move for him to get his confidence back again.
