One thing that’s been established time and again in the last week is that Chelsea were very interested in signing a left winger.
Matt Law wrote today that “consideration was given to signing a left winger [but] Chelsea ultimately decided to keep their powder dry to try to fill the positions they really need at the end of the season.”
Alejandro Garnacho appeared to be top of their list, and we heard various sources mention him through the window, although he ended up working his way into Ruben Amorim’s plans and staying put at Man United.
But another name which was mentioned – and looks more and more likely to become a top target for this summer – is Jamie Gittens of Borussia Dortmund. A report from Germany which came out yesterday named him as a potential €80m-100m target for many top clubs, with Chelsea named alongside Liverpool and Arsenal as Premier League sides watching the English talent who has 11 goals and 3 assists this season.
Jamie Gittens as a young player at Dortmund.
From their current left wing options, Mykhailo Mudryk looks likely to be banned for multiple years for doping. Joao Felix featured a couple of times on the left but has been loaned to AC Milan with a view to a sale. Pedro Neto has played there a few times but prefers to be on the right, as does incoming wonderkid Estevao Willian.
Jadon Sancho is the first choice, but as the season has passed, the same weaknesses which caused him to struggle at Manchester United are coming to the fore once again. As we said when he signed, he just doesn’t have the explosiveness to break defences. He’s a nice piece to have in a really functional team, but Chelsea can and should aim higher.
Academy grown youngster Tyrique George looks great – but as ever the manager is reluctant to trust youth team talent.
We expect serious Gittens interest this summer.
