Sunderland's new manager has an area on the pitch that he desperately needs to target a new addition in.

Sunderland AFC's search for a new head coach was finally brought to a conclusion as former Lorient manager Régis Le Bris' arrival was announced on Saturday evening.

The time the Black Cats hierarchy have taken over this deal means that they are somewhat behind in preparations for the new season and can only now begin to utilise the transfer window.

Outgoings will be prominent in Le Bris' mind, with two key figures, Jack Clarke and Trai Hume, subject to interest from some of England's top clubs.

The head coach will have to balance the outgoings with incomings and an area that needs to be targeted is the centre-forward position.

Since Ross Stewart departed the club last summer, they have lacked goals from their strikers, with new additions Luis Semedo and Nazariy Rusyn both struggling to find the target.

If Le Bris is to succeed, he needs more goals from his players up top and a new striker must be prominent on his transfer shortlist.

Sunderland's striker signings have proved a complete failure

Stewart's summer departure saw the North East club move to sign four new strikers, three of them on a permanent basis.

20-year-old Semedo joined from Benfica, 18-year-old Eliezer Mayenda joined from Sochaux, 25-year-old Rusyn joined from Zorya Luhansk, and 20-year-old Mason Burstow joined on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Mayenda was a project player, but the other three were all outlined to play a key role in Sunderland's season.

In truth, these signings did not make the mark that was expected of them with their lack of experience in football telling throughout the season.

As the end of the campaign approached, the minutes for these youngsters dropped with interim head coach Mike Dodds using Jobe Bellingham or Adil Auouchiche in a false nine formation.

For the three permanent signings, there is still suitable time to deliver for the Black Cats, but loan moves for both Semedo and Mayenda make sense next season as they look to develop their game away from the Stadium of Light.

Le Bris must target experience

For Sunderland and Le Bris, they will look at last season's forward failures as indicative of a team who are inexperienced. Therefore, they should be targeting a top-level Championship striker who has experience that could benefit the youngest squad in the division.

A reliable goalscorer will be a key factor to Le Bris' success, but the hierarchy at the club still seem determined in keeping with the pattern of signing youth products. So far in this window, they have been linked with Musa Drammeh, but it seems as if he will join Hearts in Scotland.

This outcome matched with recent reports stating Sunderland are now targeting more experienced individuals should come as hope to the fans.

A man who should be on the Frenchman's radar is Kieffer Moore. The striker was a January target, and is a proven goalscorer in the second tier, having netted 54 goals in 173 games. Aged 31, he is at the opposite end of the scale to Sunderland's strategy, but his knowledge could be crucial in developing the raw strikers they currently have.

Other possible targets could include Neal Maupay, Ike Ugbo, or Oli McBurnie, who all represent players who have scored goals in the Championship.

Time will tell as to who Sunderland will bring in as their new striker, but surely their new head coach will be desperate to sign a reliable goalscorer.
