Referee Maurizio Mariani has received criticism for missing a slew of blatant yellow cards in yesterday’s Serie A clash between Juventus and Inter Milan.

Today’s Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, highlight four instances without a booking.

Overall, by the standards of the Derby d’Italia, yesterday’s match was not a controversy-filled one.

There were no penalties, nor were there big penalty appeals.

Nor did any players receive their marching orders.

Inter Milan can hardly complain that the result came about refereeing errors as they could perhaps do from recent matches against the likes of Bologna and AC Milan.

That’s not to say, however, that there were no issues with Mariani’s handling of the match.

Mariani Under Fire: Four Missed Yellows In Juventus 1-0 Inter Milan Clash

Firstly, the Gazzetta note, in the first half there was a very heavy challenge by Juventus striker Randal Kolo Muani on Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella.

That late tackle ripped into the Nerazzurri midfielder’s boot. He was visibly limping around the pitch for a few minutes afterwards.

Therefore, in the view of the Gazzetta, it was a clear yellow card, despite Mariani not giving one.

Then in the fortieth minute, Bianconeri winger Francisco Conceicao cynically brought down Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries.

There was little attempt by the Portuguese to play the ball. And it halted a dangerous run by Dumfries.

However, Mariani did not see the tactical foul as worthy of a booking, somewhat mystifyingly.

In the second half there was a very heavy challenge by Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie On Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni.

The Gazzetta argue that this, too, blatantly constituted a bookable offense. Yet, once again, no yellow card from Mariani.

And lastly, there was a blatant dragback by Juventus wingback Tim Weah on his Inter opposite number Federico Dimarco in the 54th minute.

As with the situation with Conceicao in the first half, referee Mariani was almost bizarrely lenient on what appeared to be a blatant tactical foul.
