Blues have plans to move away from St. Andrew's in the coming years to a huge 60,000 capacity stadium.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Birmingham City sit at the top of the League One table with a healthy advantage over the chasing pack and supporters will have already started to think about their team playing Championship football once again.
Blues have come on leaps and bounds over the course of the last year, and some would argue that relegation to the third tier has been for the best as it has allowed a full reset for both the playing and coaching staff.
While there are still a couple of months to go in the season, exciting times are ahead for Chris Davies' side both on and off the pitch, with the American owners looking to take the team to stratospheric heights in the coming years.
Plans to move away from St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park have been put in place, as Birmingham look to take themselves to the next level in every aspect.
The club purchased an empty 48-acre site in April 2024 in the east of the city for a colossal £51m, and they soon unveiled plans to create a new Sports Quarter on the land that will house a new ground for the football team.
It is expected that the stadium will be able to hold 60,000 supporters, with Tom Wagner setting a target of 2029 for the completion of the entire set-up, but he has admitted that this target "is lunacy".
Nevertheless, there is great excitement for Blues supporters and Football League World has asked their Birmingham fan pundit, Mike Gibbs, if he will miss St. Andrew's if a move does happen.
He told FLW: "I think it's really exciting. Obviously, it's quite a while away at the moment and we've got to sort the land out, sort out the sponsorship, build it and get the team in there. So, I think it's a long way off, but I think the actual plans for it are really exciting.
"What it would do for the club and what it would do for Birmingham would be massive, and I think most importantly for the club, it would drive a level of revenue that we're just not going to be able to get from St. Andrew’s. So, it's really, really exciting."
Mike continued: "I'm not necessarily sure I would miss St. Andrew’s, to be honest. I think it's a great stadium, but I think because the new ground would be so close, there will still be an affinity with it.
"Although there will be a new stadium, it's within the area and I think that's the most important thing for me. I've been going to St. Andrew’s since 1995, and I do love it. It's such a great stadium and atmosphere, but I don't think it will be a miss. I think everyone sees the benefits of a new stadium."
While there were question marks over Knighthead when they first arrived at Birmingham and sacked John Eustace with the team involved in the play-off chase, they have rectified their mistakes and the club is now on the up.
Blues have taken League One by storm, and they look set to return to the Championship at the first time of asking. If they do see out this season and take the league title, there is no doubt that they have the capacity to compete in the top half of the second tier.
Wagner has been brilliant for a club that was left in ruin by the former owners, and he has true belief that Birmingham can return to their former glories in the next decade and a new stadium is the next step to doing that.
