With Toni Kroos deciding to hang up his boots after the Euros, Real Madrid are actively seeking a suitable replacement for the seasoned midfielder, and according to a report from SPORT, the club has set its sights on Nice’s Khephren Thuram as a potential candidate.

It is no secret that Real Madrid are currently scanning the transfer market to bolster their squad for the upcoming season.

While they have already secured the signings of two forwards, Endrick and Kylian Mbappe, Kroos’ retirement leaves a noticeable void.

The German midfielder has been a crucial part of the team’s core and his absence means that the midfield now lacks the stability and experience he provided.

A new budget-friendly name in the orbit

The latest name to emerge as a potential reinforcement is Khephren Thuram. The 23-year-old is a right-footed defensive midfielder known for his ability to build play.

The Frenchman is a versatile operator, capable of playing both as a centre-back and a midfielder, which adds to his appeal.

Currently playing for Nice, his market value stands at €35 million, as per ‘Transfermarkt’. However, given that he has only one year left on his contract, Nice might be willing to sell him for a lower price, estimated between €15 million to €20 million.

It must be noted that Thuram is also set to represent France in the upcoming Paris Olympics, which has brought him into the spotlight.

Interestingly, he is the son of former Barça player Lilian Thuram, and his brother Marcus Thuram plays for Inter Milan. Adding to his appeal, his agent, Oscar Damiani, recently endorsed him to Real Madrid.

Damiani mentioned, “Khephren would fit better at Real Madrid. I already recommended it to Carlo Ancelotti,” highlighting the player’s potential to thrive under the guidance of the Madrid coach.

For now, Real Madrid do not plan to put much focus on signing a midfielder as they believe they have enough power to go through the 2024/25 season. But if Ancelotti changes his mind, Thuran can be an option to consider.
