Real Madrid and Andriy Lunin are on the verge of an agreement for the Ukrainian to pen a new four-year contract with the club, after a successful season in which he proved key throughout their La Liga triumph and path to the Champions League final.

His future had been in doubt, with his contract up next year, and the prospect of returning to a role on the bench next season, as Thibaut Courtois returns to fitness. The Belgian also looks set to start in the Champions League final. However Lunin has agreed to compete with Courtois with his spot, as per Relevo, and only minor details stand between pen being put to paper.

The club feel he has earned the new deal, which also gives them much more power in a potential negotiation should another side come in for him. The deal will also see his change of status recognised, and a salary hike from one of the lowest in the squad. They expect offers for the 25-year-old this summer, and have pacted with his agent Jorge Mendes that they will consider offers should they are deemed ‘important’. Bearing in mind Lunin is due to start for Ukraine in the Euros this summer, this is not ruled out.

It’s a deal that makes sense for Real Madrid, who secure a strong back-up option and potentially a larger fee should he be sold. Lunin obviously gets more money, and perhaps it is a sign that there are no major offers on the table right now, otherwise it would have potentially earned him more money and a starting spot elsewhere. There is also perhaps some hope on his part that he can eventually replace Courtois.
