Real Madrid parted ways with one of the most promising talents to have come through La Fabrica this past summer in Rafa Marin.

The 22-year-old centre-back was sold to Serie A side Napoli after he spent the last season away on loan at Deportivo Alaves and made a solid impression.

However, things have not gone according to plan for the Spaniard in Naples, with him not being favoured by manager Antonio Conte.

Marin set for La Liga return with Real Madrid keeping close watch

Having featured just two times in all competitions this season, Marin is set to leave Napoli this month on a loan deal.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the former Real Madrid defender is set to return to La Liga with a loan move to Villarreal close and the Merengues are keeping a close watch on the situation.

Despite having sold him to Napoli for €12 million last summer, Real Madrid have not lost sight of one of their most promising academy products, having retained two buyback options for €25 million in 2026 and €35 million in 2027.

The Spanish capital club’s coaching staff continues to monitor Marin closely, recognising that he could be a long-term solution to their defensive problems.

As such, Real Madrid view the defender’s imminent loan move to Villarreal positively, just as they did when Napoli was chosen as Marín’s destination in the first place.

Having found it hard to break into Napoli’s team under Conte, the young Spaniard will be eager to make the most of his time once his joins Villarreal on loan later this month.

As mentioned earlier, Los Blancos’ buyback clause for the defender will become active in 2026, so they would have to wait for another year to bring him back or negotiate a fee with Napoli if they intend to re-sign him this summer.
