Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has said that the Los Blancos do not worry much about being the favourites for any tie, let alone for the upcoming UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

The German international explained that everyone at the club does whatever role is assigned to them which allows the team to be focused.

Speaking on the podcast he hosts with his brother Felix, Kroos said, “Real Madrid’s experience an advantage vs Dortmund? I also said this against City, in retrospect, it doesn’t matter who is the favourite.

“I don’t think that matters to us. We do whatever role is assigned to us. We know what’s coming and that an incredible amount of things can happen in a game.

But of course, we go there focused on doing things as we do. Finals always have a very special character.”

Referee at fault during Madrid vs Bayern

Kroos also talked about the contentious offside decision in the recent match against Bayern Munich during the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals.

This decision led to Matthijs De Ligt’s disallowed goal, which would have potentially leveled the score at 2-2 in the final moments of the game.

The Bayern defender scored during extra time, but just before his shot, referee Szymon Marciniak blew the whistle upon his assistant raising the flag for a disputed offside call.

Neither the assistant nor the referee allowed play to continue, even though the ball would have ended up in the net, as the white team’s players and the goalkeeper had already halted upon hearing the whistle.

“It was a bad decision. We have to let the game continue and let the play end,” said the midfielder.

“I think the mistake is mainly the assistant’s because if he raises the flag, the referee understands that he has seen it clearly and trusts that there was probably an offside of three meters.”

The midfielder added, “[Bayern’s] anger is justified because we have to face the situation until the end, 100%.”
