Hansi Flick has changed a lot at Barcelona in just a year at the club and the results of his first season at the club speak volumes on the same.
For starters, the manager has improved the team’s performance on the field, tactical ideas, mental resilience, and fitness regime. What he has also brought to the table is more professionalism and discipline.
Over the past year, it has become normal for Barcelona players to even miss games if they arrive late for team meetings and training with Jules Kounde and Inaki Pena notably paying the price for the same.
While the approach may appear harsh at first, it did go on to instil a greater sense of discipline and professionalism in players.
In a recent podcast with his brother, Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos compared the philosophy of Barcelona and Real Madrid in terms of discipline in recent years and hailed Hansi Flick’s strictness which has brought a tangible change in the dressing room.
“With Hansi, some players have been left out of the team for arriving late for a meeting. This has happened several times at Barça,” he said.

Kroos then went on to elaborate on the situation in Madrid and how it would be impossible to pull off such measures at the club in recent years, especially with the manager himself arriving late on multiple occasions.
“They are different philosophies. At Real Madrid, they would have laughed,” he began.
“Many times you didn’t know who was late if the player or the coach. It’s a different mentality, not letting someone play because they’re five minutes late for a meeting,” he added.
Finally, he diplomatically refused to compare the two schools of thought and labelled them as different ‘philosophies’, although the tone of his message was a clear sign that Flick’s disciplinarian figure was impactful.
“They’re just different. They’re both fine. We could say that Flick’s is typical of Germany.”
