Real Madrid have their targets locked in to pursue after the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup. Three new faces have already arrived, but there is a plan to bring in further support for certain positions on the field.
The left-back position, on that front, is one Los Blancos are pursuing with great interest. Alvaro Carreras has emerged in recent weeks as a strong target in the department and will be the board’s top priority next month.
Carreras is currently in the United States, taking part in the Club World Cup with Benfica but the initial plan was for him to be a Real Madrid player by this point in time.
Carlos Carpio (via Ruben Martin YouTube) brings to light the story of how the deal did not go through.
As relayed by the Spanish journalist, Los Blancos had an agreement in place with Benfica over the transfer of the defender and had agreed to pay out the release clause over two instalments.
The Portuguese side, in fact, even agreed to the proposal and everything appeared set for the transfer to progress.

Unexpectedly, however, Benfica then slowed down matters and began delaying talks much to Real Madrid’s dismay.
In the end, they even registered the player for the Club World Cup, thus blocking his move until the end of the event.
Real Madrid are furious with how Benfica handled the entire situation, for they hoped for Carreras to be in Xabi Alonso’s plans this month.
After all, the delay in talks can only be labelled intentional considering all factors.
With Ferland Mendy injured, Fran Garcia played Los Blancos’ opening game of the competition and will continue to start in the coming games.
Should the deal go through, Carreras is expected to comfortably bench the Spaniard and take over as the team’s left-back.
