Real Madrid’s victory over Real Oviedo last weekend was overshadowed by an ugly incident in the stands of the Carlos Tartiere stadium.
According to reports from AS, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. were subjected to racist abuse during the game, with at least two individuals imitating monkey noises.
The first incident came in the 26th minute when Mbappe celebrated his goal by sliding onto his knees.
From the stands, a disgusting “uh, uh, uh” chant could be heard. Sadly, the same gesture was repeated later in the 63rd minute when Vinicius Jr came on as a substitute for Rodrygo.
Though only a small number of people among the 29,758 spectators were involved, the incident has caused outrage.
Vinicius, who has been targeted with racist gestures on multiple occasions in La Liga, did not stay quiet this time either.
The Brazilian immediately reacted when he heard the chants as he entered the pitch. He was visibly angry, especially after he assisted Mbappe in the opening goal.
At one point, Vinicius turned towards the stands, pointing his finger and shouting in response to the abuse.
After his goal, Mbappe also responded by defiantly looking at the crowd and gesturing with his finger to his ear, making it clear that he would not be silenced.
Adding to the tension, some Oviedo fans threw beach balls onto the pitch in reference to Rodri’s Ballon d’Or triumph last season, mocking Real Madrid’s players.
This further fuelled Vinicius’ anger, who saw it as yet another attempt to disrespect the team.
The incident has once again raised questions about how Spanish football is dealing with racism.
Despite La Liga’s efforts, episodes like this continue to appear, leaving players and fans demanding stronger action.
