Jesus Vallejo was one of the talking points as Real Madrid began their US trip with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of AC Milan.

The game saw Vallejo start in central defence alongside Antonio Rudiger, amid whispers that he may become the club’s fourth-choice centre-back next season.

Real Madrid notably did not concede a goal till the time Vallejo held the fort alongside Rudiger. Speaking to the media after the game, the former Frankfurt defender reflected on the final outcome while also talking about his future at the club.

Vallejo on the AC Milan defeat

Vallejo evaluated both the team’s performance and his own, saying, “I would highlight all moments of the game in which we were good, others in which it was noticeable that they had more rhythm of play, this was their third game and for us the first.”

“I felt good with Rüdi, back there. Meeting up with my teammates again, it is a joy to play with all of them, they have tremendous quality, both footballing and human, it is good to reintegrate into a squad like this,” he added.

Jesus Vallejo went on to talk about Carlo Ancelotti and the trust he has put in him throughout the pre-season so far.

“The manager always gives me tremendous confidence. In every game, in every training session. I am lucky to know him a lot, from the first day he gave me peace of mind and confidence, I know his working method and I think I can fit in well,” he said.

Vallejo expressed gratitude for Ancelotti’s confidence, “It’s a privilege to be counted on for this great team. It’s clear that the manager knows me, we’ve worked a lot together, and I’m grateful for that. I’ll repay this trust daily, on and off the pitch.”

Vallejo on his future

However, the highlight of the interview saw him talk about his future and express his desire to stay put at Real Madrid, at least for the time being.

“I am here to work hard, happy to meet up with these great players again. It is a privilege, I have to enjoy it, take advantage of it, and give my best to be able to stay here, with these people,” he said.

Talking about the road ahead, the defender added, “The objective is to be available for as many games as possible to lend a hand, to give a bit of competition to these great central defenders that we have. There will be moments for everyone, the season is long,” he added.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt defender went to talk about his summer preparations and what it is like to play in the United States. He also reflected on a viral photo against Man City.

“Since last season didn’t go very well, I tried to have fewer holidays. I saw that I didn’t need them, that I needed to get back into the dynamics of the team and competition. It’s been great for me to get back into the rhythm that I was lacking,” Vallejo said.

Regarding a memorable photo of him against City, Vallejo said, “I don’t remember that photo very much, I remember more the game, those moments when I was able to help the team. I always try to be ready to lend a hand when the manager considers it, that’s my job.”

Shedding light on the pre-season trip to the US, the defender added, “It’s amazing, they’ve been there waiting for us ever since we arrived at the hotel in Chicago, they encourage us a lot, and we appreciate it. It shows everywhere we go.”

Jesus Vallejo’s optimism could be a good sign for Real Madrid heading into the new season. However, fans will be worried about reports of his injury during the US tour, with the Spaniard reportedly walking out of training with discomfort.

It remains to be seen whether or not this will have any bearing on his availability for the rest of the tour.
