FC Barcelona are continuously working to improve their squad depth and the strength that they have. However, things have been rather difficult in recent transfer windows due to their lack of financial strength. Ultimately, Barcelona have had to resolve to other measures of finding quality players.
Some of these methods and measures included going after free agents to save the cost of some major transfer fees. The likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Andreas Christensen, Inigo Martinez, and others have proven that this is indeed an effective strategy and it simply needs the right kind of scouting beforehand.
However, heading into the summer of 2025, a certain Bayern Munich star is on the course of seeing his contract expire. That player, valued at €50 million currently, is none other than Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies. Regarded as one of Europe’s best offensive left-backs, the player would be a great addition to any team.
Barcelona, as it happens, would reportedly be one of the interested parties. Similarly, Real Madrid from Spain are just as if not more intrigued by the possibility of signing the player. In fact, advances made by Los Blancos for him made it seem like they were in pole position to land the player’s signature.
Now, however, SPORT has provided an update that claims that the club from Madrid have cooled down their interest in the player. The reason behind this is the lack of response from the player’s camp and the willingness to negotiate with other teams simultaneously.
Simultaneously, however, both Barcelona and Bayern Munich have ended up accelerating their respective objectives with the player. The team from Germany wants to renew and extend his stay beyond 2025, and they have reportedly made a considerable effort to improve their financial offer to the player in the hope that he accepts it.
Barcelona, on the other hand, are still hoping that Hansi Flick’s presence could be a great pull for the Canadian fullback. However, for the Catalan giants, there is a need for more time. The club is hoping to pull some additional levers moving forward that would allow them to return to the 1:1 rule, which would then make the operation a lot more feasible.
Until then, this war over Alphonso Davies remains a rather compelling storyline. While Real Madrid may have cooled down their interest, there is still no guarantee that they are completely out of the race. Similarly, both Barcelona and Bayern Munich will also be eager to see their respective approaches work out.
