Varane, who joined the Premier League side in the summer of 2021 from Real Madrid, made the decision privately in January and it has now been confirmed that the defender, who won the World Cup with France in 2018 as well as four Champions League titles with former club Real Madrid, will be available on the market as a free agent this summer, with clubs in Saudi Arabia already rumoured to be interested.

The Frenchman’s season, and indeed career at Old Trafford, has been blighted by repeated injuries, having made 30 appearances in all competitions this campaign and a total of 93 in three seasons, never starting more than 24 Premier League games in a season.

Varane himself took to social media to say goodbye to fans:

“To you guys, supporters of Manchester United, it has been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wear that shirt. The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player was insane, the atmosphere was amazing. I fell in love with the club, with the fans, you have to play for Manchester United to understand what that represents. For my kids, it’s home here. It’s going to be a special place for me in life… I will see you at Old Trafford to say goodbye in the last home game this season, it’s going to be a very emotional day for sure.”
