Russell Martin’s ramshackle Rangers collapsed at its first test today as the side crashed to a 1-1 at Fir Park. Russell Martin was dire today.
Ibrox Noise offers our player ratings on a dire evening’s work in Motherwell.
Butland:
Once again showing some form, even if Motherwell’s shooting was mostly woeful, and pulled off a decent save or two. Wasn’t under the same pressure as v Panathinaikos. 6
Tavernier:
We’re not quite sure how that floaty trundled weak header beat ‘Well’s number one, but it did, and otherwise Tav wasn’t the worst offender on the pitch. He is no leader and that will never stop being the case, but is now hamstrung by an even worse defensive setup under this hopeless manager – stopping entirely for the equaliser and whining about offside was typical him though. 6
Djiga:
A little shaky but mostly cleared his lines and managed an excellent 5 interceptions. Doesn’t work well beside Souttar but that’s not his fault. 6
Souttar:
Another good solid showing individually and one critical block stopped this being a loss, but there’s no understanding at all with his partner. 7
Aarons:
That this RB has been forced into LB and looks completely at sea isn’t his fault. We didn’t exactly get excited about his arrival, but this manager is doing him no favours. He was exposed many times here. 5
Raskin:
A little quiet – not quite the captain material many Rangers fans are shouting for, and honestly has been distracted and subpar in all three competitive matches thus far. 6
Rothwell:
Has had no impact since joining – what did we expect from a Bournemouth reject. Fans were excited after the first leg v Pana, but he’s been pretty non-existent in our view and didn’t show enough to drag his midfield into this match. 5
Dio:
He barely got into this one at all – even quieter than his two cohorts, the Ivorian barely succeeded at anything he did and was hooked. 4
Dowell:
Some fans thought he was almost ok in that first half, but his hapless fumble letting his man past and just walking lazily as Motherwell were scoring summed him up. A staggering ‘must-pick’ and Rangers lose 2 points in part because of him. 4
Gassama:
Started brightly and had some potency about him but the hero of two cameos ended up anonymous in this one and faded after a while. He did work hard though and was not the worst out there. 7
Danilo:
Staggering this flop gets in the shirt, it really is. 4
Subs:
None of the subs had a single positive impact alas, and were all duff.
Manager:
Where, oh where do we start here. Russell Martin’s post-match rant of throwing his players (the ones he screwed over in the first place with another dire selection) under the bus this aggressively, this fast, has already lost the dressing room and the fans that he might have had onside. We’re sure some will buy into his post-match nonsense, but Russell Martin was dire today and should not have been appointed manager of this club and the tactics, XI and stubborn arrogance of the man and his method reflect this. We’d get rid but that will cost the club yet more wasted money to sack him. We were heavily against this appointment and the season opener hints at why. 0
