QPR made the decision to loan out Zan Celar earlier this summer after a disappointing first year at Loftus Road.

It was reported by The Athletic last summer that the London outfit agreed a deal worth £1.7 million, plus add-ons, to sign the forward.

However, the 26-year-old contributed just two goals from 19 appearances in the Championship, with injuries hampering his time with the club.

Indeed, both of Celar's goals came in a 2-0 victory over then-relegation rivals Cardiff City at the end of November, where it had looked as though he was going to kick on and find form infront of goal. However, the rest of the season proved a major disappointment.

The Slovenia international has now joined German side Fortuna Dusseldorf on loan, with the option to make it permanent in 2026.

Zan Celar transfer regret

When asked if the club should’ve loaned out Celar, FLW’s QPR fan pundit Louis Moir claimed it was the right decision.

He’s highlighted the attacking options in the squad, along with the possibility of earning a fee back for the Slovenian if he does move permanently next summer as reasons why it’s a good deal for the club.

“I think in all honesty, it hasn’t worked out with Celar and loaning him out was the right decision,” Moir told Football League World.

“With us signing [Richard] Kone, with [Michael] Frey getting back fit, signing [Rumarn] Burrell, it’s looking like it would’ve been hard for him to get a place in the team.

“I really thought maybe this season he’d kick on pre-season and improve and be that main man.

“I don’t know what it is, maybe he hasn’t settled, sometimes you sign these players from abroad and it just literally does not work out.

“Obviously he’s gone out on loan and that may be become permanent at the end of the season, but it was definitely the right decision.

“It’s a shame because last summer, him and [Nicolas] Madsen were the two marquee signings with the money spent.

“Hopefully it’s looking that way that he’s going to leave and we get some money back from him, that’d be a plus.

“Shame that it’s not going to work out.

“And then he’s got two cracking goals away at Cardiff, showed slight improvement and then got a bad injury, so not the greatest time his career at QPR.

“Obviously, it’s been short-lived him now going out on loan and looking to leave permanently.

“Right decision, we just have to hope our strikers step up for once.”

QPR have earned just one point from their opening three fixtures, with Julien Stéphan’s side set to face Charlton Athletic next on 30 August in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Zan Celar decision makes sense for QPR

Celar’s first season for QPR was very underwhelming, especially as they paid a seven-figure fee to sign him.

Loaning him out with the potential to recoup some of that cost in 12 months is good business, especially with the forward options now at Loftus Road.

While it’s been a disappointing start to the new campaign, it’s hard to imagine keeping Celar would’ve helped much for the team’s 7-1 loss to Coventry City that he missed.

The team has enough attacking firepower now without the 26-year-old, who disappointed when he was available last season.
