FLW's QPR fan pundit believes that a new progressive ball-carrier would push the side to the next level
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
QPR have made some decent moves in the transfer window so far this summer, namely bringing centre-back Amadou Mbengue and winger Kwame Poku after they both excelled in League One.
However, given the number of first-team players who were on loan at Loftus Road last season, there's arguably still plenty of work to do to bolster the squad with quality before the transfer window ends on September 1st.
Perhaps another central defender could be required after losing Ronnie Edwards, or a versatile left-sided player to fill the void Koki Saito left when he returned to Lommel SK at the end of the season.
FLW's QPR fan pundit, Louis Moir, is thinking elsewhere, though, and is looking at bringing in a player to fill a role he believes hasn't been filled at Loftus Road for some time now.
Moir believes that a progressive, ball-carrying midfielder is what Julien Stephan's side need to take the next step into a serious play-off contending side.
Speaking to Football League World, Moir feels that several players need to be bought in a few different positions before the end of the transfer window, but stresses that the most important is a "progressive number eight."
"I think we need at least three or four new signings before the season really gets going, but one important one I'd say to the owners or the CEO is that we desperately need a typical, progressive, number eight midfielder," he said.
In what he would want from that role, Moir explained, "A ball carrier, someone who can progress us up the pitch through defence into attack, someone who can play on the half turn. I just think we've lacked that.
"If you've watched us over the last few years, we may have had one or two midfielders who have been neat and tidy, but when it comes to that progressive midfielder, we haven't had that for a while."
Whilst Moir didn't name-drop any suitable candidates, he feels that the right man can propel the Hoops to the next level.
"It's something we desperately need, and an important missing piece to that puzzle. If we get that coming in, and if they're any good, it could actually be a gamechanger for us.
"It could take us into a serious side because we've got good players around him in different positions, so if we were to sign that progressive ball-carrier, then it would be massive for us."
Moir believes that adding someone comfortable bringing the ball forwards out of defence and starting attacks would "add a different dynamic" to the current QPR side.
He continued, "We could switch things up and have Jonathan Varane and Sam Field as holding midfielders.
"Sometimes we could have a forward three and be more attacking, and sometimes we could have a midfield three, which would be more balanced defensively, so it would definitely add a lot.
"For me, this is a big priority, and fingers crossed we can bring someone in who fits that mould," Moir conlcuded.
QPR's signings have already given Julien Stephan the groundwork to hit the ground running, and that's even discounting that the CV of the former Rennes boss puts him among the top managers in the division for the upcoming season, anyway.
The R's have struggled with scoring for some time now. They may have seen an improvement in the number of goals they scored last season, but they still wound up a bottom-half team for the third straight season.
Ahead of their 11th season in the Championship, figuring out how to score at a decent rate should be near the top of Stephan's 'to-do' list.
Signing someone who can make QPR play high up the pitch and create chances themselves could possibly help make that happen.
