QPR: Loftus Road won't be surprised that American import is now a free agent | OneFootball

Niko Hamalainen had so much potential, but his nine-year spell at QPR was ultimately a letdown.

There were high hopes for Finnish full-back Niko Hämäläinen when he joined Queens Park Rangers from FC Dallas in 2014.

Ten years later, he finds himself without a club after failing to hit the ground running.

Hämäläinen has one of the more interesting career paths, having begun his football adventure in America, and ending up playing most recently in his homeland, Finland. The Finnish defender was spotted by QPR when former West Ham United midfielder, Ian Bishop, a family friend of the Hämäläinen family, arranged a trial for the youngster at Everton.

The American import eventually graduated into the senior team, making 30 appearances for the Superhoops before his departure in 2023. After a short stint with HJK Helsinki, Hämäläinen now finds himself without a club. However, this may not come as a surprise to QPR fans, as the Fin struggled for consistency during his time at Loftus Road.

Hämäläinen had to bide his time at QPR

The left-back spent a year in the QPR academy, before graduating to the senior squad. His first taste of professional football came in 2015 when he was signed on an emergency loan by League Two side, Dagenham and Redbridge. His debut ended in a 4-1 defeat in the league cup at the hands of Charlton Athletic.

Returning to QPR in 2016, the Finland youth international made his R's debut the following year, coming on as a substitute for Joel Lynch in a victory over bitter rivals, Fulham. This wouldn't be his big break though, as he made just three appearances for the R's in the next four seasons.

Multiple loan spells away from Loftus Road continued to help the exciting prospect develop into a Championship standard player. He returned to the USA in 2018 with Los Angeles FC, but his big break would come in the Scottish Premiership the following year. Hämäläinen joined Kilmarnock on a season-long loan and went on to be a firm fixture in the Killie's first team.

Playing 28 times in the top flight of Scottish football, Hämäläinen gained vital experience that could finally see him challenge for a spot in the side at his parent club. This would prove to be the move that would finally convince QPR to give the FIn regular game time, but things didn't go as hoped for the budding young defender.

Hämäläinen failed to impress at QPR

After the stint in Scotland, Hämäläinen finally had his chance to fulfill what he set out to do when he made his move across the Atlantic in 2014. QPR had gone from a Premier League-challenging club to a mid-table Championship club in the time between his arrival and the present, so the Finland international had done well to bide his time and wait for an opportunity to become a first-team regular.

The 2020-21 campaign was the best it would get for Hämäläinen, as QPR had finally taken notice of the ability he displayed in Scotland. Playing 22 times in the Championship, the defender started 18 of those matches and was averaging 79 minutes per match.

Whilst he was by no means bad, the R's thought they could do better than what the Finnish international could offer. His 22 appearances in 2020-21 were the final league appearances he would make for the club he grew up contracted to.

Loan spells away from Loftus Road came once again, as he was sent back across to Los Angeles, this time with the Galaxy in 2021. He then headed to Botafogo in Brazil and then RWD Molenbeek in the Belgian second tier. All three of these spells yielded little success, which saw a lack of minutes come his way. QPR finally decided to end their nine-year relationship with Hämäläinen in the summer of 2023, after his stint at Molenbeek didn't convince manager Gareth Ainsworth that he was worth keeping at the club.

Frustration as Finland International is now a free agent

The tale of the 27-year-old is a frustrating one for both QPR and the player himself. A real case of what could've been should he have hit his potential. Both Hämäläinen and the R's were patient with his development, hoping that he'd eventually become the player they'd hoped for. However, after a mediocre spell in the first team and unsuccessful loans, the Hoops had little choice but to move him on.

Hämäläinen headed back to his homeland in Finland, joining up with HJK Helsinki. Having been out of the fold for the national team since 2021, the move back to Finland offered the full-back a chance to play regularly and prove why he still should be in contention for his nation.

Once again, playing time was limited. This led to him only playing eight matches for the club before his release at the end of his contract. Since then, the Fin has been without a club, which is a sorry sight for someone who had so much promise.

Unfortunately, this may not come as a surprise to QPR supporters, as the years of watching Hämäläinen sit on the cusp of the first team and failing to impress on many of his loan spells would've seen his chances of becoming an important player get slimmer every year. The defender was liked by the club but will go down as another what could've been story, as he didn't achieve his potential. The question on everyone's minds now will be whether there is a road back for Hämäläinen, or was HJK his final chance?
